Is that a good or bad thing? Smiley face... I just went with the two basic ideas I had and span them out into an epic fretless-a-thon - for some reason I was attracted to a slightly cheesy Hammond sound on the bass solo at the end... oh well - I never know what to make of these things but I was surprisingly motivated this month - I did want to do something with some big melodies on it so I hope that comes over.

Thanks for listening :)

V. cool, Mike.

Nice percussion. The fretless sounds superb - very expressive, almost 'vocal' and synth-like in places. The Hammond-style tone towards the end is amazing, as is the playing!

My only constructive criticism would be the ending - slightly too abrupt perhaps, as I was nicely grooving along at that point and then it ended... But that's no big deal - I just played it again :)

Cheers Paul - I know the ending just kind of ends but well, the fact you stuck it on again is kind of the idea - this is also one of those tunes that I really could have kept working on and adding more and more sections etc - I wanted to keep it tight and say "what's done is done" - I just worked on this over the last three nights and can't face doing any more now :)

Thanks for the feedback - it's always appreciated

Got mine completed all in a day!
Well seeing it's a solo bass piece then, eh!

It seemed appropriate to get good ue of the sequencer section on the Bass Murf for this one & had fun playing with the filters at the same time as (trying to) play bass. :)

The drum fills could do with more swing though [bit straight] just my opinion of course :)
Although it is really hard to swing Midi parts for that Jazz thing. But good stuff.

Like the idea, i feel it could do with a little more variation because of the track length.

Cheers Garry.
I totally agree it could have done with some more variation (it was originally almost 8 mins long!). Had I the time, I was going to put some guitar on top of it & maybe even some vocals & that way the bass would have not needed to do any more, but I'm working all weekend & my next day off is Wednesday so I doubt I'll get a chance. :(

I'm looking forward to getting a good listen to the other tracks (probably Wednesday).

Hello, not been on here for a while been trying to get my head around Sonar, just thought I would whack one out when I saw the pics :D, this is a tongue in cheek take on the pics and me and my missus couldn't record the vocals through giggling. Done with Sonar and some loops that came with it, also found a pitch shifter had some fun with that, a couple of hours fun and here is the result. Nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) https://soundcloud.com/9thaspect/dandelion-jazz

Very avant garde. Very dark and melancholy. I like it :) The tone and FX remind me of Portishead - especially the intro to Roads. Cool stuff. And impressive that you tweaked the filters while playing it 'live'. I felt it was crying out for a beat or some other instrumentation towards the end - not a criticism as such, as it does work as it stands. Nice one, G!

Welcome back Steve, hope all's well with you. Nice loops! And you've thrown them together very convincingly - it sounds great. Lazy and laid back... I really love the brass and upright bass in particular. The vocals are fun too. Or should I say "niiiiiice"! :D

Thanks for that Garry , do you mean looser in the timing playing off the beat kind of thing , or varying the actual timing itself ?
I might have half a chance of getting the sticks out again ;) ,

Here you go, guys. My frustration is that, whatever the merits on my composition, the resulting sound of midi muck is suck city. It is my bass and (perfectly sh*te) guitar over a Band in the Box background. So it all sounds a bit cacky. The fade end is because BIAB just stops and, weak as it sounds, it was the lesser of two evils. I rest by my view that doing everything yourself in your home studio makes for really bad Jazz  In short, judge the composition, not the performance!

My thoughts were 'Blue Note' sessions are usually simple written heads over 32 bar sequences and 10 choruses of solos. The waltz idea was because the second image was a flower and a straight grooving blues didn't reflect the visual concept as well as a waltz.

Thought I would have a go at this months competition. Don't have a soundcloud account or proper recording equipment so I have used a blackberry playbook video recorder and the internal microphone. Not the greatest quality but as its a video you have the added bonus of my gurning bass face throughout...

The second picture made me think of spring... dunno why... just did... So I have created this piece called 'Spring Greens', which is what I happened to be having for dinner when I wrote it.

This also isn't a jazz piece... but never mind!

My girlfriend has created me a YouTube account and uploaded it for me (clever girl) so here is a link to that

Sorry mate - I missed this.
More the actual drum fills are sounding straight 8's, rather than swing 8's or triplet feel.
Like i said trying to make a MIDI part swing is very hard.

Nice work, Mike! That new ending is great. Are the strings following the b-line via Melodyne or is it that new audio-to-MIDI thingamajig in Live? Whatever... it really works :)

This is a lot better than I was expecting, given your salesmanship in the description! ;) The composition itself is really good to my ears. Sure, the MIDI elements suck out some of the intended swing, but to a jazz novice (i.e. me) it sounds very cool indeed. The mix is a little "distant", but it almost adds character - like a vintage recording. I genuinely dig it.

Welcome aboard Rob and bonus points for being the first person yet to post a video in these monthly challenges! Nice playing, great melodies and a beautifully warm tone. Really clever use of a looper pedal as well... I like how you play with the various layers throughout. Top marks mate!

That's fantastic! And finally, a song played only on bass that I don't hate! (Apart from on by Flea, but you couldn't really call his a song). Well done :)

Thanks fella - I was walking around London yesterday and I had the idea for the ending so put it together quite quickly when I got in - it is the bass part put through Melodyne - and using a little auto-harmonisation in Kontact 4 which is where I got the string sounds from - it's all in FMinor so that helps... glad you like it - the tune feels like it has a proper ending now - glad I took your advice :)
