Hi I'm doing a project where i look at the kind of work a new session player should expect to come across, and what that work will expect of them!

anyway i made a 6 question survey. Anyone who has been involved in session work please check it out please!

Also if anybody could perhaps refer me to a better suited section for this thread to go that'd be great. Also the titles of any books about going into session work would be amazing!

I've asked a lot of you, so please ask me anything! I'm a bass guitarist in Brighton and am making the transition to double bass.

It might help if you define what you mean by "session work". Are you talking about recording work or live work? Strictly speaking, anyone being paid to play a single gig or series of gigs for a band that they're not a permanent member of is doing "session work", as they're being paid for the session... I suspect that you're intending a tighter definition than that though?

'Most musicians I know consider 'session work' to be a session in a recording studio. I don't ever recall anyone refering to a live gig as a session.'

+1 . A gig is a gig.
A 'session' is a recording session and there's very little professional 'session' work nowadays. I don't think I even know of any UK bassists who are full time session players anymore. Or even one who's work comprises more of sessions than gigs.

dlloyd, don't you think that you're being a little pedantic ;)

Yes, that's what I would call a session musician... but given the opening definition in its Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session_musician , there's maybe some potential for confusion that the OP might want kept out of his survey. (I noticed that a few days ago when somebody else was equally pedantic on this forum!)

I have never worked with a fellow professional musician who has referred to themselves as a 'session musician'. Most say freelance musician. I do sometimes hear other people use that term in error, but as its fairly commonly done it's easy to work out what they mean. I also would only say I was going to a session if it was a recording session.
