One of the (very) few singers that my 12 year daughter listens to, that I don't mind being on in the house!

The Locked Out of Heaven bassline is a bit of a guilty pleasure, too....

My only gripe with the Bruno Mars thing is that most of the basslines are on ERB unless played live when its always a guy with the boring old Fender 4 string again! Is it still that uncool to be seen with a 5 string? a P bass 5 in 3 tone burst would surely still have 'that look' yet have the extra notes to play it as the record. Other than that yeah He is cool :)

An example before anyone says I am talking sh*t again

Great performance and show but where has all that bottom end gone, fwiw the bass sounds ace and the low notes have plenty of beef but the main riff sounded better in the lower octave on the record to my ears?

Jamereo Artis is an amazing player! He won a competition on MTV, think it was to play in P Diddys band, which unfortunately can't be watched in the UK even though all the episodes were on MTV's website.

If you dont need more than a P bass then why bother with a 5?

Check this....

Ps. If anyone wants a short transcription of "Treasure" I did it a while ago and can email.

Locked Out Of Heaven is just a tremendous piece of pop songwriting. Apparently he pushed for it to be released as a single against the wishes of his co-producers. I think he's a really talented guy with his head screwed on too.

Just started playing it with the function band too, getting its first live outing tomorrow, hoping it fills the floor!

That song he did, locked out of heaven is a superb pop song, Bruno does have a bit about him.

Definitely. I wonder of the album that song is on all sounds like that? Sooooooo Police sounding, I love it. This live version is excellent:

Thats not my point, If Bruno was not happy without the ERB in the studio why is happy without it live?

Could be any of the following reasons; don't want to ship too many instruments when travelling, the p bass' looks suits the band image better, when on tour or playing more than one song they might not want to swap instruments for a slicker performance, on some performances Jamereo might use an Octave pedal instead....

Only people that will know are Bruno and Jamereo.

Absolutely agree, when I did it a couple of months ago with one of my dep acts I played it on a low B (well, A# actually) and it sounded great - much better than an octave up.

Love playing this song though and Locked Out Of Heaven is on my to learn list.

Yep thats where we play it too, OK you can drop tune but you dont get the tight response of a proper B string like the record. Locked out of heaven is also easier on a fiver IMO because its easier to grab the F on the B string, again probably is either a 5 string or a B strung bass on the record? Ignoring the extra notes anyway love it or hate it (as we all do) even the standard range notes have 'that' sound when played on the B string.

Got to be a low B, like you say, it's just so much simpler to play it in that position, trying to play it in the first position just feels really counter-intuitive

Don't really like the song, but refreshing to hear slap on what sounds like a P rather than a J with both pickups on.
[/quote]yeah sounds like a Precision to me.. could be a Jazz with the back pup rolled off mind.

True, I did say it was my only gripe so it is a very minor one really

I'm glad you said that I thought it was the start of another P bashing session

I like the fact the bands adapt the live shows from the records , I've done plenty of covers recently where I've found live versions working wonderfully on my 4 string, where the record doesn't.

I like BM

This thread has got my band playing 'locked out of heaven' next gig! Excellent work! We already play 'just the way you are', mainly because someone requested it a month back and the singer already knew it. Locked out of heaven though is a tremendous tune!

Not at all I even suggested a five string p bass of some kind :) A B strung four would be ok but the riff is repeated in the higher octave for the middle eight which is going to have you up and down the neck.

I always thought that I didn't like Bruno Mars - think some of his lyrics are a bit crap. However, keeping an open mind, I hear some of his tunes and think they are really catchy (with some cool bass). And I've seen a couple of his live performances on tv and he and his band were smokin'! Fair play, it is nice to see a musician respecting the live scene and doing it justice. So maybe I actually like him after all!
