Beer of the Bass
For me, finding out what gear people have used helps me to make informed choices as to what I might enjoy using myself, not really to emulate those players wholeheartedly, but to help narrow down the list of stuff to check out. Some top-quality punnage there my friend! Back OT... I don't really have what you might call heroes or idols; but there are quite a few bassists whose style and or tone interests me. Owning (or at least borrowing) the same type of bass that they used allows you to get some kind of feel for whether the instrument facilitated or hindered their playing. Or at least it kind of does, because every individual bass varies of course - but at least it gives you an idea of what was going on in their hands, if not in their heads! You can also explore some of their individual technique better if you have a similar instrument, knowing that the differences between the way you sound on a sixties J and the way Jaco sounded on one (for example) is down to the differences between you and he, rather than the guitar itself. Does that make sense?
Jazzneck
Maybe, C**tyb******s, but the guy who sold Jaco his #1 Jazz categorically states* that the woolly-hatted one rammed two whole packs of Golden Grahams up the truss rod channel to improve tuning stability. * See page 92 of '1001 facts about Jaco's gear that'll make you gouge your own eyes out' (Random House) .
Jaco did not - fact - I've still got my golden pair! JTUK
I don't have heroes or idols but certainly have influences. I'll take note of what an admired player uses but only upto the point of whether I like what the kit is capable of..as I am under no illusion that it will make me sound like them. I borrow from too many to be interested in any sort of clone thing..

marcus bell
I like to know what gear is used if I like the sound produced by it, although it's in the fingers and desk sound blah blah.
leschirons
I buy what suits me, playability and looks wise. Not interested in famous player's gear. No point in buying a Fodera ying-tong in order to sound like Victor Wooten unless you put in the other 25 years of experience, practice and theory to go with it. That's what makes him, him. I always end up with the same sound anyway no matter what I use as I like a particular sound and seem to be able to get it no matter what I use.
