Cosmo Valdemar
Don't remember seeing this posted on here before so here 'tis, Mr Squire and his Rickenbacker, possibly the ultimate expression of Prog bass playing and composition and a masterclass in pickstyle. xilddx
Awesome! I wish I could find Tempus Fugit isolated. There's a fabulous bit in there that I can't work out how he executed. Very weird.
Dingus
Thanks for posting this . I am still in awe of this track and Chris Squier's brilliant bass playing on it well over thirty years after first hearing it .
SlapbassSteve
Fantastic tone and playing there! Had forgotten how good the playing was on the Fragile album.

gary mac
Good find. I shall have my headphones on this evening, listening to Fragile and then the Yes Album, whilst wifey watches dross on the box.
Cosmo Valdemar
'Interesting' fact - Fragile was the first album to feature Squire running his bass in stereo, i.e. sending each pickup to separate amps. On previous albums, he was still running two amps but split the mono signal from the bass.

spongebob
Good call. I was warming up for a gig on Sunday - ran through a few of my own lines, and then played the main riff from 'Tempus Fugit'. Unbelievably, a fellow bassist from the previous band (very nice chap) came across, and recognised the line instantly! First time I've jammed a Yes bassline, and had it noticed! Nobody noticed my own lines though, probably as the last bands' records sold about 3 copies.......
jonsmith
Haha, that would have been me. EDIT: to say I noticed your lines & your 4003 sounded great! Edited May 8, 2013 by jonsmith
KevB
Can anyone recall another, more obscure band, that had a tune on one of their albums that included a riff that was a real rip off of HotS? I think it also used a bit of Close To The Edge as well. Not Starcastle, they were just general yes soundalikes all round. Think the band's name began with A. Really starting to bug me now. Edit - found it now in my itunes library, it was a band called Atlantide. Knew it was obscure! Edited May 9, 2013 by KevB

Nice to know I'm not the only Ric-fan in this part of the world...... BTW - I did comment to our guitarist when I came in about your sound - total JJB - good man! xilddx
which bit ?
The best example is at 4:26 on the video, it's just a little connecting run that sounds so lovely and liquid and effortless. He does it slightly differently each time and it's things like that which set apart the really great nuanced players from the plodders and imitators. It's a bitch to get even close to sounding good, I emailed him about it but got no reply of course http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iN4m4v06e_s Edited May 8, 2013 by xilddx

visog
That is an awesome tone... gritty, fudgey low-end. Really great musical line too. Loved Yes' arrangements from this time - no block chords and roots anywhere on this album! Was a rumour that CS nicked the changes for the first part from KC's 21st Century Schizoid Man... which you can hear is similar although not played as 16ths. grenadilla
How did he get that distortion? Is it a Vox amp cranked with a bit of speaker distortion? What speakers and how long before they were blown out? Would you loan him an amp?
