It occured to me a few weeks ago that certain songs have improved my technique in set areas. Two songs which immediately spring to mind are:

Smooth Criminal has really improved my right hand plucking speed

Captain Crash (Bon Jovi) has improved my timing as I really struggled to play it in time at first.

What pop/rock songs do you feel have really improved your technique?

maybe Anthony Jackson's part on "For the Love of Money" by the OJays.

I'll use the word articulation, I mean to say his line is just clear and meant.

I don't play with a plectrum much, but songs I'd recommend for that include:
Our Song - Yes (90125) ('tube)
Flame Of The West - Big Country (Steeltown) ('tube)
Gazpacho - Marillion (Afraid of Sunlight)

Parallel Universe is bloody hard to play fingerstyle - did I read somewhere that Flea actually uses a pick on that track (live at least)?

What?... It's 'one note plucking' on verses, simply needs control and stamina.

I'm really wondering, why it's hard for him to do with fingers (yeah, he plays Universe with pick Live), while he played Fight Fire with Fire with Metallica and Rob Trujillo in LA about a week ago...

here's Universe live:

and here's Fight Fire with Flea (about 4:00 - rehearsal...):

and evening's live, faster, i believe..:

That will be precisely why its hard for me!

To be fair, I should have said its hard to play it in a tight and controlled way fingerstyle, which is actually why it is a good exercise.

I found Town called malice was a good tune as it made me realise how unstable my timing was.

Never too much has improved my slapping technique and

Wake wake me up before you go go has definately improved my fingering speed.

And Chinese way is an excellent tune to practice fingering techniqe, especially if you play it in different positions and use the opportunity to practice string skipping technique
