Greenslade - Time and Tide. Is that a 'classic' Jazz sound?

Just because a particular bass is shown in photos of the band playing live and on the cover of the album does not in any way guarantee that it was the one used to record with.

Agreed, and there are many examples where that has happened but it's all I can find at the moment. I'm still looking...

TBH the only way to be sure would be to ask Martin Briley or someone else who who was involved in the recording of the Time and Tide album. Pity it wasn't Tony Reeves as we could have asked him directly as he's a member here.

I found that Martin Briley, now based in the USA, has a web site and a contact page...

So I emailed him a couple of hours ago.

This is his reply.

"Never played a Telecaster Bass in my life, that must be a picture of someone else.
I played a Rickenbacker 4001 bass on that record"

So now you know. The bass used on Time and Tide was a Ricky.

Hope that helps :)

Excellent detective work.

According to the sleeve notes Martin Briley used an EMS Synthi HiFli so the bass could well have been processed through this. Plus of course there could always have been some keyboard bass synth backing up the bass guitar to give the final sounds.

What is appaent is that, despite all the rhetoric, you CAN'T tell the make/model of a bass by the sound :)

C'mon everyone knows that fender grow their own trees and smelt their own copper - how else do you think they manage to sound different to everyone else ?.

Absolutely, a great sound. Been years since I listened to that Album. Used to have it on Vinyl but didn't get round to buying on CD when I (foolishly) sold all my LPs....

I'll be getting this and the other Greenslade albums as soon as I can :)

There's also a very neat compilation called 'Shades of Green' which covers the first 4 albums if you want a ready made collection for in the car.

I was talking to Keith Turner from Quasar and on one of his early 1984 recordings i was positive he was using a Rik. He told me it was a precision or jazz with the neck pup only and strings lowered enough to achieve a click / fret buzz when plucking with fingers.

I think he quoted Carole Kaye as his influence for this but would need to check if that is correct name or not.
