Mickeyboro Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 My mobile says 'is that a classic j...' If jazz album, ok. It doesn't measure ip to their first 3 rock albums either IMO. If I am wrong in my guess, apologies. Quote
Mickeyboro Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Sorry, crap answer typed on phone. Not their best album, and I always thought them prog rather than jazz. Quote
Bilbo Posted May 17, 2013 Author Posted May 17, 2013 Is it a classic Fender Jazz bass sound? I keep reading about it but don't know what it is! Quote
Mickeyboro Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Ah, got wrong end of stick! Tony Reeves used precision on first three, can't remember what Martin Briley used - you could be right! Quote
irvined Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 I seem to remember him having a custom Rick 4001/strat double neck when I saw them but it was the 70s! Cheers, Doug Quote
Bilbo Posted May 17, 2013 Author Posted May 17, 2013 The LP cover had what looked like a White Jazz on it (rear cover picture) but, remember, I don't know s*** Quote

Mickeyboro Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Greenslade were the first band I ever interviewed as a student, 1974. We'll never have a guitarist, they said. They lied... Quote
Bilbo Posted May 17, 2013 Author Posted May 17, 2013 I can't remember them ever having a guitar player on their recordings. Am I wrong (I know it's unlikely but it has happened before)? Quote
KevB Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 I think there was some guitar work on albums after Tony Reeves left and on a couple of tracks on Spyglass Guest that Reeves does play on (guitar by Dave Clempson guesting). By pure coincidence I have had this CD on in the car this week, some good tunes. Not sure if it 'classic jazz' sound though. I don't think of the jazz as having so clear an identity as a P bass. Is Jaco's back p-up heavy honk a 'classic' jazz tone? Quote

irvined Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 I think I was at this gig: http://www.aylesburyfriars.co.uk/geofft33.jpg Here's the double neck, strat at the top. Cheers, Doug Quote

Mickeyboro Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Damn this phone! Briley played both hence the 2x neck. In fact I believe he was a six stringer by trade... Quote

Bilbo Posted May 18, 2013 Author Posted May 18, 2013 What is appaent is that, despite all the rhetoric, you CAN'T tell the make/model of a bass by the sound Quote
I always remember thinking they had somehow 'sold out' when I heard Clempson on Spyglass Guest - so much so that I refused to buy it and I used to love Greenslade at the time - mind you, I was only about 14 when it came out With regards to the OP - there's definitely some live vids from Bedside era showing Tony playing a White/cream Tele bass. Urban Bassman Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 Definitely a Tele in this photo of Martin Birley So I think to anwser the question it's no not a Jazz sound. It is however a great bass sound on that Album IMO. Quote
