WalMan
Make sure

you get really good 'phones or you'll lose the bass
you have a good means of providing your own tailored monitor mix with something like the Aviom units. I used to run a bit of bass, my b vox, kick & snare & the merest smidge of lead vox & guitrar
you try before you buy. It's not for some and an acquired taste. With well fitting plugs you run the risk of feeling isolated & losing ambience.

It can be less versatile than running auxes from the desk as typically digital desks will have greater control over the output audio than the Aviom. Whilst these systems such as Aviom, ME-1 and say the Powerplay systems are great for a high number of discrete monitor mixes, for smaller groups, aux sends with control via say an iPad may work better for you. Don't be led into thinking that such systems are the only way of achieving great IEM mixes.

Check this out... http://www.allen-heath.com/uk/News/Pages/NewsDetail.aspx?NewsId=672 This is where the monitor break out systems come into their own... A set up like that would require 56 output busses... The sensible choice is therefore the monitoring systems... But even so, that's 14ks worth of gear on stage just for getting the audio to each player. On top of that is the cost of the desk of the master desk to send such audio and earphones for each player. Wowsers... They aren't the type of systems you'll find down the Dog and Duck :-p
WalMan
I just know I had the IEM transmitter & an Aviom mixer fed by a CAT5 from the stagebox in my monitor rack. Not used it for a while now & looking to sell the IEM at the mo.
