tom1946 Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 on Later with Jowels, the singer/bass player had a jazz with the strings on upside down? Why? Do many people do that? Quote
kevin_lindsay Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 Andy originally learned to play on a left handed bass, so he got used to the dtrings being that way. Jimmy Haslip is a left hander who learned to play on a right handed bass, turned round so he got used to the "upside down" layout. Quote
KevB Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 Lee Pomeroy and the guy from Doves are other lefty upside down string offenders. Pomeroy actually uses a LH bass but presumably has got so used to the stringing from previously playing RH basses upside down he won't swap back to conventional stringing. Looks well weird onstage but doesn't seem to compromise his playing, still seems to eke out a living Quote

Mr. Foxen Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 I did a guitar rebuild for a guy like that. Lefty guitars mess with my head enough, that was worse, ended up with more winds on the tuners than I usually do so I had a second chance if it went wrong. Quote
sblueplanet Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 Im a lefty who plays with the strings upside down. I never really thought about it until it was too late, haha! My older brothers were in a band and I used to hang around rehearsals and have a try on all the instruments when they took a break. Liked the bass as it was strung with smooth flatwound strings and I could manage Walking On The Moon by The Police which was just out. Didnt get my own bass until 1982 and never owned an actual left-handed bass until 1993. Quote
