norvegicusbass
I know when learning a new tune we have to look intently on our fretting hand but do any of you really closely observe your plucking hand when learning a tune?

neepheid
No, I don't, because there are only x number of strings, therefore x number of positions for my fingers to be and the muscle memory for that isn't too taxing, can do it by feel alone. Gust0o
I wanted to say: you watch your own plucking hand, mate But the moment has passed No, not really, I don't tend to look at it. I do have some issues with my plucking hand - a legacy of some old breaks and a bout of Carpal Tunnel - and I think I've only probably looked at it to check if I've found myself in any pain. Beyond that, it's all fretting hand.
spike
My plucking hand generally takes care of itself but if I decide to look at it to analyse what it's doing it starts messing up.
seashell
I don't look at the plucking hand . And have been known to pluck the wrong string on ocasions! :-0 Often look at fretting hand though.
Hobbayne
I dont like watching bands where the bassists looking at their fretting hand. I dont know why, it just annoys me!
tonyquipment
Yeah I only look at my fretting hand to memorise the patterns and shapes Don't bother with the striking hand, that's automatic You don't watch your feet when you drive do you? arthurhenry
For some reason I enjoy watching my plucking hand when playing live, though I don't need to. It's like a well calibrated machine....that sometimes goes wrong. Occasionally, I look up and make eye contact with the back wall of the venue. EssentialTension
Never look at plucking hand. Most likely to look at fretting hand when moving position but, once in position, different fingers do different intervals, so no real need to be looking then. BassTractor
I only practise while watching the BBC Porn Channel. That way I'm best prepared for live gigs.

Myke
I've started to recently as I noticed I had bad technique (very bent wrist) so am trying to keep that in check but not while gigging
Mr Fretbuzz
I take a look occasionally... the books say use raking or alternative fingers so I tend to take a look now and again, and guess what I'm doing a mix of both but normally it works out ok

icastle
An occasional glance at my fretting hand if it's moving up past the 12th fret, but other than that, I don't generally bother.
norvegicusbass
This was meant as a question about the learning process really and not gigging. I know most people will look at their fretting hand when remembering the patterns but not sure if anyone puts much effort into thinking about patterns of plucking so to speak. And by looking I really mean the effort to establish a pattern of fingering rather than staring at ones hand. mep
Only very occasionally if I'm picking and jumping strings a lot. Won't bother if using fingers though.

lurksalot
I never look at the plucking hand ....except last gig.... there were only 4 peeps left at the gig ( B/H , good weather , loads of local festivals , excuse etc etc ) , so I joined them on the dance floor . cue well oiled young lady drapes herself over me , and pretends to play strum style over my right hand . being polite and the song being Dakota , the right hand just does a LOT of repetetive finger flicking so I demonstrate this to her , she cannot quite get it , and looking at my technique , says it looks quite rude , at this point I think my technique is working , except the young lady makes her excuses , walks off the dance floor and pukes her way back to her seat.... class. I like to think the potential of my technique sent her head into a spin , though more likely the close encounter just turned her stomach
