Lfalex v1.1
It is a superb score. And better for the fact that the main title theme uses an electric bass guitar and drum kit alongside regular orchestral components. I have it on a CD in my car. It has an interesting effect on my driving... Haven't heard a Schifrin piece I've not liked yet. Magnum force has a good soundtrack, too... bassace
Way back then I went to The Gaumont State at Kilburn to see John Coltrane; he was impressive enough and had Eric Dolphy with him. But the 'support' was Dizzy Gillespie. He had Lalo Schifrin in his band, on piano. Very impressive then as today. Carol Kaye on both scores I believe.
Guest McBass
This score by David Shire is pretty awesome too... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kYR3lxQti4
Kiwi
I believe Stanley Clarke once played alongside Lalo Schifrin and said it was one of the most challenging gigs he'd ever had to do.
Green Alsatian
There's a real menace to the Dirty Harry soundtrack, paired beautifully by Andrew Robinson's superb performance as Scorpio. This tune sends a shiver down my spine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yp8DGoaDZ5k I'd also struggle to find a Lalo soundtrack that I don't like - Enter The Dragon's another favourite of mine. lowdown
Lalo Shiffrin is an amazing composer, all those cop themes and scores had so much intrigue in the music, with his Jazz back ground certainly shining through. He could plot and score to the picture with so much ease. Dirty Harry live suite [Not a great sound recording] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3UF29oQ9bM His Big Band concert [2006] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiVgB3TYxks Garry Edited June 8, 2013 by lowdown
Green Alsatian
Oh, and I prefer his version of the Starsky & Hutch theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtKOSsmKPfE

Gwilym
If you like Lalo, it's worth checking out "The Cat" by Jimmy Smith. Hammond Organ goodness, backed by Schiffrin arranged/conducted big-band backing. Some years ago, I saw an episode of Ironside and the music was a cut-above the usual 60's/70's TV shows. It turns out that Oliver Nelson did a lot of composing/arranging for tv/film music back then.
Bassman Sam
And thought it was just me that liked LS's work. Dirty Harry was a great movie and great score. A fan here. Garry, thanks for the big band vid, ace.
TimR
Don't forget Mission Impossible. Each character has a 'theme' whenever they're on set the music changes, brilliance. The CD is a must have.
