That bright, juicy Wal sound through a driven amp, played well.
Norm
Pro's: The little isolated burbling bass break on Nick Lowe's "I love the sound of breaking glass" ? Sounds ace to me! Mine: Sticking the drummer to the back wall at rehearsal last night with the thunderous noise coming from my trace v4 through my very recently acquired barefaced vintage, awesome! wombatboter
Whether or not you like Elton John check out the fretless sound on Nikita. (not to mention the rather tasty girl playing the part in the video..... "tasty girl?".... I told you not to mention it).
Some strong vibrato but I have my doubts it's a fretless David Paton used...

I know a lot of it is down to his technique, though. Edited June 13, 2013 by LethalLion

Bassman Steve
As soon as I heard it, I knew I'd be chasing the sound of John Deacon in Bo Rhap when he plays the run-down from D to G just before the 'nothing really matters, nothing really matters to me' bit almost right at the end. Those notes are just pure bass tone to me (I appreciate others won't agree).

jazzyvee
Best bass sounds I've heard live is Stanley Clarke at the London IndigO2 at the 02Academy when he was there with Return To Forever in 2008. Jazzyvee
SimonH
Jonas Reingold. This whole track is just... basstastic. I think I want to eat his tone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lhyJVEtiN4
Spoombung
A great bassline and one of the smoothest tones. I think it was played by Walter Becker who is a very underrated bassist. Note: arriving on the top octave when the chord changes then plunging to the bottom one very quickly. Chris Squire also does this. Kiwi
1) My Spector NS5CR through almost any kind of Class D amp into my EBS 212 neo cabs. Enough warmth to sound full without being overwhelmingly boomy, shedloads of midrange growl. 2) Pedulla Pentabuzz through some kind of chorus into two GK RB700 combos, loud enough so that the strings start being sustained by feedback. risingson
What about this for a lovely Precision tone? Distinctive but sits in the mix, woody but defined. Sweet! Not sure I can do a 'best ever'! But if I had to choose a player who's basses, amps, fingers and talent I could appropriate for my own, it'd have to be Pino...
Oh yes! Pino's sound is murderously cool, so is Michael League's.
funkgod
My 2 fave sounds i use, are.. my 82 wal with a SWR pro 500 and swr 6x10.... clean and punchy. my 81 G&L L2000E or 83 L2000 with the above or for soul and blues with a TE 350smx and mk1 TE 4x10 cab. Others Mark king has had loads of nice tones over the years i love, too many to list. Magnum coltrane price with nils landgren's funk unit sound awsome, ( check him out !) Jerry Preston's BC Rich with Maceo parker sounds killer. Alan Spenner's wal . Gary Willis, again so many, but the tone on Bent is hi fi bliss (its only music one of my fave bass tracks ever) victor wooten again so many. Pino's MM fretless. Steve williams when he had his redhead combo with his fender jazz always sounded great with loose change. Tom kennedy with dave weckl Dave margen had a top sound with santana. This version of blast by marcus miller. so much better than the CD, The bass tones on night fly, Abraham Laboriel on donald fagens new frontier i use to love, then you listen to some of the other tracks on nightfly and Marcus Miller on maxine and the night fly Anthony Jackson on I.G.Y and Ruby baby .....................( tho a more rounded sound with the top cut) Chuck Rainey on green flower st These all sound similar with with varying degrees of top. a compressed bottom and a nice crisp crunchy top, the whole album is worthy of a debatable thread of it own.
