Stingray 5 : an appreciation

Hi, took my Stingray 5 (recently acquired on ebay for £650 !!) to its first rehearsal last night - what a great bass. Superb B

3rd attempt at a 5 string. 1st was a Ken Smith Burner bought on this very forum. Great bass but 16mm string spacing was a no go. Off loaded to the Gallery.

2nd was a Tobias Killer B (also bought here). Much better string spacing (17.5mm) but never got used to small body shape which made playing while sitting awkward. Again offloaded to Gallery.

Already own a pre-eb and a 1987 3EQ.

You grabbed an absolute bargain there, congratulations! I have been though a few 5 strings and I can honestly say in a real working band situation the Stingray 5 I had was the best, it just cut through the mix and I had so many good comments on my sound, even from the drummer.

I struggled with the spacing a little but only sold mine to buy another Roscoe Beck V which is the most comfortable bass I have ever had. I now really want another Stingray 5 to add to the collection, I can live with the spacing because they sound so good.

Let me know if you find you dont need the B string.... :D

These are indeed very fine basses . I would go so far as to say that the sound they produce is the equal of many exotic boutique basses costing much more . In many ways , they are the best five string I have ever played . I haven't got one myself because certain things about them don't suit me and would prohibit me from ever buying one , but they are undeniably great - sounding basses , and for £650 you have got yourself a mega - bargain that should make playing it all the sweeter . Enjoy it .

They are just proper basses that cover all genres IMO.

Oh , yeah ? Try playing death metal ragga hip hop fusion on one and you will find it sorely lacking in certain areas . :D

That buttercream is epic, I'd have a tort guard on it myself but that is easy and a personal thing. :)

I like mine. :)
Plug 'n' play, and I don't seem to need to dial.
In a weak moment, I doubted the need for a Bongo, and I lurv Bongos more than I lurv my ex.
Spoken as a true noob of course, as always.

I owned a SR5 a while back and it was hands down in the top 3 best basses ive ever owned. nice slim neck, the best build quality you could wish for and THE best B string ive ever played. its one of the classic basses of all of time. imo
[/quote]
I think they play better than they look you know, I wish the SR5 had started out like the new Classic 5 but they are becoming the classic fiver now I think, still see lots of pro players in mega high profile gigs playing them by choice.

Oooh that unlined baby is hot!

Yeah, I thought so too.
18 years old, and though not cheap, at least it was near mint.

No fret wear at all!

I liked that buttercream a mucho grando lot - with that weird pg.
Did that 2005 Lim.Ed. always come with a pg like that?
