I forgot Bob Babbitt! How could you possibly forget Bob Babbitt. Seems like everybody else did too!
[/quote]
Not forgotten, just didn't make anyone's top ten.

For me Babbitt was up there with the very best and an equal of James Jamerson and Carol Kaye as far as those Motown records go but never seems to get the plaudits the other two do. Although an saying that James Jamerson is probably more famous now than when he was alive.

Two favourites are
Aston "Family Man" Barrett
Stanley Clarke.

Then in no particular order of ranking:
Marcus Miller
Victor Bailey
Gary Willis
Richard Bona
Chuck Rainey
Nathan East
Victor Wooten
Ron Carter

Stanley and Aston, although completely different players are on an equal par for me in terms of my favourites. The rest I have no particular preference as to who's playing I prefer as it varies from track to track.

Don't usually do this sort of opinion poll, but
I liked Andy Fraser... and his work stands up even bnow.
Ready Freddie
Marcus Miller... you can't ignore him
Will Lee... unlucky that MM was about..and he still has had a STELLAR career.
Anthony Jackson..

But... I'll nick bits from anyone

I really like Lemmy - great sound, great look, great player? Not necessarily got the chops (maybe he taps Jazz standards with both hands privately though…), but he's cool as f***!

Jaco
Anthony Jackson
John Patitucci
Chris Squire
Geddy Lee
Martin Turner (Whishbone Ash)
Mick Karn
Kay Eckhardt (John McLaughlin Trio)

Hmm. Difficult as I'm not really a bass aficionado. I've tried to pick a few from the pop, rock/prog and jazz fields who've impressed me most over the years, be it on record or live...

Colin Moulding
Andy Rourke
Geddy Lee
Chris Squire
Glenn Hughes
Mick Karn
Marcus Miller
Skúli Sverrisson
Tim Lefebvre
and finally, the player who has struck me as having the best balance of monster chops, melodic taste and sheer visceral thump would be... Tony Levin

In no particular order, and 10 just isn't isn't enough:

Stuart Zender
Paul Turner
James Jamerson
Flea
Bernard Edwards
Billy Sheehan (is not my lover)
Larry Graham
Mike Inez
Robert DeLeo
Rocco Prestia

It pains me to have to leave out Mark King and Justin Chancellor.

What a bassplayer that guy is! Doesn't get nearly the love he deserves. Apparently Jamerson taught him? Is that true??
