xilddx Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I like the shape but that hole looks totally arse. Quote
Happy Jack Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Having owned just one bass with a sliding pickup, I'd happily buy one of these. The extent to which you can control your tone with that "gimmick" is breath-taking. Quote
BigRedX Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 More evidence than when it comes to aesthetics, Warwick are completely clue free. Who was it who described their basses as "hacked out of diseased trees by blind Germans"? Quote
Junkyard Rocket Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Guy seems pleased with it. The object of the exercise is probably more about putting a bass that will be used in the hands of a high-profile endorsee, showing that the custom shop can deal with off the wall ideas, and getting talked rather about than shifting vast numbers of this particular bass. Quote
KevB Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 At last Warwick have a shot at producing a half decent looking bass and then....ah well. There have been 'sliders' before though haven't there? Gibson, Dan Armstrong? Quote
tayste_2000 Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 That shape without the hole I'd be very interested, I like the sliding pickups, just needs to be a bit cleaner ala Gibson, but it's Guy's bass and if he seems happy then awesome, Warwick aren't lining up to make me a bass. I suppose it's an issue of that bass with the hole and knowing the price is going to be £3000+ Warwick do not make cheap signatures. Quote
ezbass Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013
I like the shape but that hole looks totally arse.
Indeed; surely they could've come up with a system where the hole was covered with a matching top with a slit in it for the pickups to connect to the rail (or 2 slits for 2 rails) and have the pickups 'float' over the cover behind. A work in progress I feel. Quote
lefrash Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Love the shape, Love the idea of the floating pups, but he's certainly correct about the 'knocked up in your shed' look. As EZbass said, I would have thought a couple of rails and a smallish slit for the wire would be a better design. Its his bass though, and if he likes it, go for it! Quote
paul_5 Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 "Looks like it's been knocked up in a shed" - what an insult to us "shed knocker-uppers"! Quote
BigRedX Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 The shape already exists. It's basically a modified Starbass II single cut. Quote
Jah Wibble Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Think it sounds alright and it's a good idea...it's just fugly. Quote
tayste_2000 Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I did not know there was a Star Bass Single Cut hmmmmm Quote
Phil Adams Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Brilliant idea. Somewhere to keep my sandwiches. Must get one. Quote
Lynottfan Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I'm pleased it works for him, but it looks like a bag of clag to me, big time contender for most ugly sig model. I guess Mr P not doing the status sig thing anymore then. Quote
EssentialTension Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013
I like the shape but that hole looks totally arse.
Me too, it looked good till I saw the pickups. Quote
Billy Apple Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I think it looks great, apart from the hole, but at least they're not shying away from it and celebrating the fuction Quote
AndyTravis Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 It's just a bit poorly executed in terms of the appearance, I appreciate the function of it. It looks like it had the Enfield super pickup in it, then removed; in itself serving a very similar purpose, if not a slightly prettier, and more versatile solution to the 'all basses in one' problem. Quote
Muzz Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Well, as long as they're going to price it in the "knocked-up in a shed" price range, that'll be fine... Is it just me that thinks our friend Mr Phillips the Shed Knocker-Upper Supremo is even now scribbling down some notes from this video for his next custom project? Quote
LukeFRC Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Two thoughts.... do you not think the pickups would look a bit more stable on two rails instead on one? and... isn't it refreshing to have a "sig bass" being something some pro actually wanted and was excited about rather than just a slightly different from stock bass? Quote
Ziphoblat Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013
I don't buy the line that sliding pick-up's are The Holy Grail of tone control or they would all be doing it! I've owned a couple of basses with some nice electronics that were capable of pretty much anything.
I don't think anybody suggested that they're somehow the holy grail, but there's no disputing the fact that it's going to add an extra dimension of control over the sound of your instrument.
