hamfist Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 (edited) I feel a need for a dedicated thread for the worship of this superb pickup configuration. I know of some "double P's", but would love to know about a few more as, at some time, I would like to own another. Here's my current one (an Aria Pro II M-series) ...... Ed_S Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 [sup]I have a Fender Blacktop Jazz, which is a nice bass, but the best I've had to-date was this:[/sup] [sup][/sup] [sup]Absolutely earth-shaking thing it was, too. Sadly it was every bit as massive as it looks and made my back and neck ache in ways I never thought possible so it had to go. I never quite got over losing it sound-wise, however, so I'm currently in talks about getting a fitting replacement (also dual-P) made as a custom job for my 30th. Pictures when it comes to fruition...[/sup] Quote
winterfire666 Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Mmmmm ill be keeping an eye on this thread :^) I dont understand why there are so few current dual p equipped basses in production, its just mad. Quote
wateroftyne Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Here's the Walnut Elite II Precision I used to have: It sounded great, but weighed three times as much as Luxembourg. So I sold it. Quote
chaypup Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 My Thunder II - doesn't weigh as much as Luxembourg, maybe Liechenstein or Monaco after a particularly heavy meal. Ghost_Bass Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Can someone please tell me more about the differences in sound of the P vs J on the bridge position? Never had the pleasure os trying a double P config bass. Quote
hamfist Posted June 14, 2013 Author Posted June 14, 2013
Can someone please tell me more about the differences in sound of the P vs J on the bridge position? Never had the pleasure os trying a double P config bass.
On mine, it's simply meatier and more solid than a Jazz pickup in that position. Yet the P still retains all the character that a humbucker in that position loses to my ear. The 50:50 blend is particularly more pleasing to my ear than the same on a PJ, where there is usually a significant volume drop-out going from 100% neck to the 50:50 blend. The bridge P still does a decent "burp" jazz tone but require far less bass boosting to compensate for the inherent lack of bass frequencies in a J pickup in that position. For the life of me I cannot fathom why the double P is not more popular. BTW, nice double P's guys ! Chaypup, is the neck P on the Westone still in the "Fender P" sweetspot ? Or have they shifted it towards the neck a bit. From the pics it looks like it still in the traditional position, although it is difficult to tell just looking at it, due to the Westone's very different shape, layout and fretboard length etc. 1 Quote

FlatEric Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 A great Combination! This is one of mine - perhaps out of everything I have, this is one of the best basses I own - Certainly over the last couple of years, the most gigged. Punch, power, depth, warmth and bite!!! More about it here: http://flatericbassandguitar.blogspot.co.uk/2010_06_01_archive.html Scroll down to the bottom. I am currently in the process of doing the same set-up on a Fender Japan, 70's re-issue. Pics, when I get round to it. Quote
hamfist Posted June 17, 2013 Author Posted June 17, 2013 Flateric ....... Lovely bass indeed. What exactly are all the switching options ? Quote
EMG456 Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Flateric, I asked you on another thread if you had pictures of your Oddysey but I think you must have stopped reading that one after posting. Anyway, here it is and beautiful - I loved Oddyseys. I have no cash just now but if you're ever selling...etc. etc. Cheers Ed PS Any bigger pics of the whole bass? Quote

Cosmo Valdemar Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 I briefly owned a BC Rich Mockingbird, from the same line as Ed S's Warlock. Say what you like about the looks, the tone was superb. Very growly with everything on. It's no surprise Entwistle was so enamoured of the arrangement for a few years. Quote
warwickhunt Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 My Warwick offering. TBH the rear pup on this isn't quite as good as the trad Jazz pup on a standard SSI but I'm going to replace the pair of pups for MECs to establish if it is the pup brand or positioning/orientation that is to blame. AndyTravis Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Bit O/T but does anyone have more info on the m-series basses, there was one reviewed in bassist mag back in the late 90's (99?) and I recall it was about a grand, blue and had a basslines mm pickup/circuit in it. Google (on my phone at least) hasn't given me any clue on a model number. Might be looking... Quote
geoffbyrne Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 (edited) Short scale too, 32" I think. G. Edited June 17, 2013 by geoffbyrne Quote

I have the M-series posted in the OP of this thread and even it does not have a model number on it. All this makes me think that the M-series basses were all custom one-offs maybe ? Quote

It lives in Amsterdam now. I realised I was not a dual P type... but I really like a P at the bridge. Quote

The neck pickup was indeed a bit farther from the bridge than on a Precision. As such, it did not sound exactly like a P-bass, it was a bit more like a deeper P-bass, a bit darker, with less pronounced midrange. Quote
Gust0o Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 A few more of my BC Rich Eagle, since it made an appearance in the other thread: Showing the neckthrough... it's stained back, with the grain just visible if you try. Quote
