Who pays to play other peoples misic

Hi,

I am in a Covers Band and I would like to know who pays to use other peoples songs. Do the band have to buy a licence or is it covered by the venue. How do the song writers get their share of the royalties?

I'm a bit rusty on this side of things but IIRC it should be paid for by the venue's PRS.

The promoter should pay the PRS but most don't.

If the promoter is paying PRS you’ll be asked to fill in a form with all the numbers you’ve played.
