Mr Bassman
Some brands of strings suffer more than others from fraying silks when taken on and off our basses. Last year I devised a method of rewinding synthetic silk onto some used spiros. It was quite successful but a bit fiddly. Just wondered if anyone had tried using heat shrink? I might pop down to Maplin and buy some to experiment with anyway. Cheers all
ChrisF
I reckon that's a pretty darn good idea Let us know how it goes and I might copy you..... if its successful

Mr Bassman
Here are a couple of old spiros that I'm going to try the heat shrink on Edited June 20, 2013 by Mr Bassman
Mr Bassman
I removed the damaged outer windings, the inner core is too thin for the 2.5mm heat shrink I got. I'll go back and get some 1.5mm tomorrow Anyway I've just put some 2.5mm over the damaged length of a Weich D, see photos I've just fitted the string to my Clifton bass and it seems fine. daflewis
Interesting ideas chaps... I'm wondering if this might be useful for the innovation test sets - the silks can be a bit fragile anyway, and they obviously do take quite a hammering as they get passed around... Mr Bassman
I've yet to try the heat shrink on synthetic core strings. Wonder how they'll react to the heat gun?
daflewis
Ah! Yes... Good point! I'm not sure about the melting point, particularly of the honey core - not really something that comes up
Mr Bassman
I think there's an odd Honey + some old Kolstein Heritage in my spares box that I can experiment with when I get the time. Watch this space!

daflewis
Yeh, I've been meaning to start an identifier thread and post some pics on the innovation section, but never got round to it.... So seeing as you've actually done it, I'll get my arse in gear and post them on your thread - once I get back from my week off...
