....and what sort of jazz do you want to play? Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Glenn Miller, Coltrane, Return to Forever? There's a huge difference between them & they're all Jazz!

IMO the best place to start would be playing walking bass to standards, like for instance "Autumn Leaves", Take the A Train", "Freddy Freeloader", "All Blues", "I've got Rhythm" etc. It woud be a good idea to get a book to get you off to a good start. I found this one to be very good. It has a play along CD with jazz standards. The bass can be isolated. It gives scale numbers, but it would be a good idea to learn to read . Most of the material in the book is in 4/4 so it is reasonably straight forward from a reading point of view.

Here is the book :

Here is another site that may be of help :

Best of luck with it. :)

Dave Marks has a series of lessons on Walking Bass here :

What jazz do you like listening to?

Without knowing that It's difficult to advise, but I'd try playing that first.

I'd start with simple stuff first and work your way in from there.

Louis Jordan, Cab Calloway, Dixieland, Standards?

You’ve lasted a long time without Jazz, what’s brought this on?

Again, Bilbo is on the money. Start playing the tunes, learn them inside out until you start doing your own thing naturally and then you will know what everybody is on about in their books/videos etc. Scott Devine's online videos are great, by the way.

Start with Jamey Aebersold playalongs. Google it.

This^ if you want to be as good as I am.
I used them and stink at playing jazz.

Just kidding! I think they're seriously good, but I also think you do need an idea of what is expected of your role, as in requiring jazz listening experience.
Problem with CD players normally being you can't change the speed, I'd say it's best to convert the Aebersold tracks to MP3, and play them in a program like Audacity - at low speed at first.

I was adviced to not start with book 1, but sadly can't find my books right now to pass on the advised ones. Others may chime in.
Edit: I do remember book 2 and 3 being amonst them though, and upon checking, find that book 1 now comes with an extra CD with the music at considerably lower speed.

Good luck!

best,
bert

This is probably horrific to most of you, but these days, I rarely listen to any music. I have several music systems, all in boxes in the loft...
However, I aim to change that, and also want to inject something different into 40+ years of playing, when you get right down to it, the same old thing.

Good on you. :) The great thing about practising jazz stuff is it really improves your knowledge of the fingerboard and your understanding of how chords and intervals relate to each other, which makes you better at everything.

My only worthwhile tip: When you practise walking bass, deliberately go out of your comfort zone as often as possible. Sometimes it will sound bad but the rest of the time you'll learn something from it. I suppose you'll even learn something when it sounds bad, but learning something that sounds good is better. ;)
