Hi,

I'm looking for a bit of advice really!
I have a Black Hohner the professional jack bass guitar which I have had since I was young and is now sitting in my wardrobe doing nothing as I never quite mastered the bass (teeny hands and life got in the way). I am thinking of selling but have no clue at all of its value and struggling to find anything on the internet. Also live in a very small town with no music shops at all! Don't want to get ripped off because really is a beautiful guitar.

Can anyone give me any help or advice?

Many thanks!!

Its a odd one alright. Jacks are through-neck headless I had one and they great budget basses. Its definitely been modded to change the neck which to be honest probably reduces its value. A "proper" jack would maybe fetch £250, this one a fair bit less most likely.

Oooooooo just a picture of the back - how very helpful of me.

Do you have any pictures of the bridge? In this shot it looks an awful lot like a Steinberger bridge with machine heads- meaning the bass has machine heads at both ends? Also it looks like a later model of the Jack as the Mk1's had EMG humbuckers, Mk2's had Jazz pickups, could it be possible Hohner made a bolt on Jack later on with PJ configuration?

Interesting, that's definitely a Steinberger bridge there... I can only assume it's a later bolt-on model as the neck plate and shape of the back of the body looks legit. Most likely a previous owner loved the tone of the bass but didn't want to look like Mark King so bolted on a different neck. Impossible to say what its worth as a whole... you'd almost get more money parting it out.

Told you I was clueless!

Just remember that old adage "There are no clueless people - - only people asking clueless questions".
No ... wait! ;)

My guess is some buyers will like the idea of a regular neck, and may bite. But if the neck is not a perfect fit, I think most will be inclined to not take the risk - even if there may not even be a technically sound reason for being wary with this combination.

Like others, I have no idea what the best thing to do is, but I would start with trying to sell it as a complete item before taking the risk of only getting rid of one of the parts. Good luck!

best,
bert
