DarkHeart
well the body has arrived and very nice it is too, was wondering if anyone one knew where to get the jack socket gubbins from?
DarkHeart
story so far, body has arrived and the neck fits but like another p build the neck pocket seems a tad shallow, i might have a word with bassdoc and see if he can rout me it a touch deeper and also rout the pickup cavity bigger for the pup ive just bought, i was thinking about one of the `51 re-issue bridges with only through body stringing but i use flats and that could be a problem although any advice on that will be gratefully accepted. Ive gone with the mm style pup and will probably go for a stacked volume pot for both coils. Who is the basschatter that makes the wiring harnesses? anyway here is what it looks like at the moment the neck isnt attached. Myke
By naked do you mean unfinished or oiled/varnished? with no scratchplate?
DarkHeart
I oiled and waxed my original build and ive still got some left over so i think that might be the route to im going to take cos i do like the look of natural wood, not made a decision on the plate yet but i might go for a plain one ply black one. DarkHeart
latest update, wiring harness from KiOgon in the pipeline, pup has arrived and blue stain ordered, jack socket plate ordered, control plate ordered, rear ferrules bought but sent neck washers! (thanks CHGuitars!) I need advice on staining and finishing, i have some grain filler, do i need it if its just a stained and lacquered? i must get in touch with Howard regarding my routing and scratchplate. DarkHeart
Ok, heres the latest, KiOgons lovely wiring harness arrived this week as did a Hipshot bridge, the pup, a jack socket cup and a tin of blue stain i`ll have to get in touch with Bassdoc and see if he can route my pickup hole bigger or attempt it myself with hammer and chisel and i really dont want to have to do that as for the stain, would using a sponge be better than using a brush? Grangur
If you're going for a natural finsh, don't use filler unless you have no option. Instead you should sand it to a good finish. Then finish off using sandpaper with as fine grit as you can get your hands on. Ideally use 1000 grit.
DarkHeart
Another update, ive tried my first go at staining and did a cracking job on my thumb! im reasonably pleased with the body as well, maybe a little darker than i wanted but the maple neck stands out really well on it. now im not sure if im supposed to sand it again and stain again or just leave it Help! i knew id find a use for the wifes bit of string across the yard Edited July 7, 2013 by DarkHeart
Nibody
I'd just put a thin coat of satin nitro lacquer over it. If you start staining it'll get darker
lee4
I'd just put a thin coat of satin nitro lacquer over it. DarkHeart
the humbucker came of ebay but ive just bought a single coil job to fit the existing rout so the humbucker will probably get sold straight on.
Nibody
I have one of the hand stained ash FSR precisions from last year. If you look in the precision porn section there's a close-up of the body (it's the wine red one). There is a lot of variance to the colour. It's up to you really as its your baby but I think it looks pretty nice as it stands.
yepmop
perhaps a light sanding with very fine paper 1800? just to even it up a bit then lacquer.
Nibody
perhaps a light sanding with very fine paper 1800? just to even it up a bit then lacquer.
This. I'd definitely use a nitro lacquer, they go on thinner, dry faster.
DarkHeart
at the minute im having a go at `slightly relicing` it by sanding through some of the stain in places and thanks for the tip on nitro laquer
DarkHeart
Ive decided to stick with my original pickup plan, the bass is going to visit Howard (Bassdoc) tomorrow for the neck and pup routing and im going to give him free reign on the scratchplate design as long as its black or white
DarkHeart
right its back from Howard with a new plate and the routing and wiring sorted, cheers H another cracking job! I havent yet laquered it as i want to see where the stain rubs off naturally then maybe in a couple of months time laquer it, anyway it sounds nice and ballsy and most of all bassy!
