ambient
Well what a load of rubbish ! Here's a thread I posted earlier - http://basschat.co.u...ass-input-jack/ I went to all the bother of changing the barrel jack socket on my beloved TRB6P, only to encounter the same problem. I've noticed on some of my other basses that a slight movement of the jack plug causes the signal to drop out. Tonight out of desperation I thought, well I'll try a different cable and it was fine, only problem is that cable is only 1.5 metres long. Sorry about the poor photos, but you can maybe make out the different shapes of the tips of the two cables ? The guitar cable is the one on the right hand side. The guitar cable's tip is narrower and shorter at the end, probably explaining the poor contact with the inside of the jack socket. icastle
Yep. Although the diameter of the shaft is pretty much standardised, the tip shape varies across different manufacturers plugs. I've used 'posh' cables in the past but they've nearly always caused problems - only cables I use now have Neutrik connectors as standard because I've found they always work. icastle
I gotta say, I thought a jack was a jack was a jack .
Nah, that'd be easy and make perfect sense and we certainly can't be having with that. What generally happens with some of these posh leads is they have a different shaped tip which pushes the socket 'tip' connector back further than it should. It's great to begin with - it makes a really firm connection against the tip connector. However, that excessive back and forth motion you get, when you insert and remove the jack plug, eventually weakens the springiness and it can then lose contact with the tip of the plug - especially if you decide to change to a different type of lead with a differently shaped tip. On the open 'skeleton' type sockets you can tease the spring back into place with a pair of long nose pliers, but if your bass has a sealed barrel type jack socket then it's pretty much a write off straight away. stingrayPete1977
The ones with the springy grip ring ruin your bass and amp at the same time! Mate of mine has a tasty mesa head that can only be used with those leads now, utter cack. Edited June 22, 2013 by stingrayPete1977
neepheid
The only lead I've ever had fail on me was a Planet Waves one. Tiny sample size, not very scientific but enough to make me never want one again. OBBM 4 LIFE.

It's as long from the black ring to the tip as the other lead, but the waist bit (don't know what to call it ), is longer and narrower, so the spring bit inside the jack socket isn't making contact properly. sprocketflup
Im pretty sure that there is a thread on here saying that Planet waves cables are the shizzle and all that, I read it and bought a couple, not had any problems at all
bisonkills
Not a fan of the Planet waves stuff, especially the ones with the locking jacks. Awful and can wreck input sockets. Just go Van Damme cable with Neutrik jacks, and it'll be better than any of that off the shelf stuff. If you want someone to make them up, I'd recommend John at Orchid Electronics. He'll do any length of cable you want with whatever connections. All Neutrik jacks and Van Damme cable. He's also cheap, cables are the same price if not cheaper than an off the shelf cable.
