ambient
I'm getting an NS NXT 5 string EUB is couple of weeks or so. Can anyone recommend a decent bow to go with it please ?
fatgoogle
Bows are very personal things so best to try some out. Whats your budget? French or German? Is there enough room on a NS to bow? Just googled some pictures and the radius looks very flat and the space between body and fingerboard looks very small to et any real movement. I think people bow them.
Hi, I don't want to pay a fortune for one, but I don't want to buy something and find that it's not very good . I'm a music student so I do get a discount from some places. I've never bowed a bass before, though I have played a double bass a bit in the past, I borrowed one for a couple of months a few years ago. I'm hoping to maybe get some gigs with the EUB, but the bow is mainly (at the moment) for recording purposes.
andydye
This question interests me too as I'm after a decent beginner bow for my nxt4. The ns designs website specifically states the fingerboard is shaped as per an acoustic upright and so is 'perfect' for bowing...I wouldn't have got one otherwise ;-)
fatgoogle
Youll need a few lessons anyway. My first real bow was a carbon fiber French bow from yita music on ebay. I think it was £120 and i still have it. Very good bow for the price.

I'm guessing french is easier to pick up as the tension is done by the bow rather than by your fingers as in german? Is that the main difference? I didn't realise how expensive they could be !!!!!!!! Lessons are in hand, hopefully one of my tutors at college.
Silvia Bluejay
I have an NXT 5 and a bow. To answer your question, it is perfectly possible to bow it, despite the bridge being pretty low by DB standards, as the body is rounded and thin. Personally, I find it a lot more fun to bow my Harley Benton EUB, which has a neck/fingerboard/bridge setup which is more similar to a real DB. But bowing can be done on any EUB, I'm sure. As for "a bow is a bow is a bow", that's not true, as our experts above have said. French and German are two different ways of gripping a bow, and each kind of grip requires a different type of bow. I'm happy with French, as I'm prone to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in my left (bowing) wrist and the French grip seems less taxing from that point of view. Your mileage may vary. Fact - bowing is unfeasibly cool Edited June 25, 2013 by bluejay

Basstroker
Hi! - I play a NS-Design CR5M and it's more easy to bow than most 5-string carved double basses I've ever played. And I also use a Yita Music Top Model A German bow. But this bow is too "soft", it's not a professional bow. I also have a Gedo German 4/4 bow and this is an exceptional bow for 149,--€. But mine has a weight of 126g and is very stiff, the newer ones seem to have 143g and seem to be not so good. So every bow, every EUB/double bass is different and every player ist different. Maybe You can ask Thomann to send You some bows for testing. - Best, Thomas
philparker
I use a Yita Music Pernambuco French bow, which was about £250 and is excellent value for money. I think I would have to stretch to the £500 - £2k for a second-hand bow to get better quality. They're a good company to deal with as well. Mine arrived with a crack even though it was very well packaged; when I emailed them they couldn't understand how it happened when the packaging wasn't damaged. However, they didn't quibble - they sent me a replacement and refunded me the postage to return the old ebony frog.

For the money you really cant get a wood bow to beat it for less then 500-600. Get it re-haired when it arrives and you'll be sorted. I guess the next question would be what rosin would you recommend for a bowing novice, and about how much should a rehair be (roughly)? fatgoogle
I pay €60 for silver stallion Mongolian horse hair but it depends on who you can find to do it. Im currently using pops which IMO is really good for orchestral stuff and not so good for solo stuff. Youll have to try out a lot of different rosins over time to find your favorite.
