Bilbo
I have several cds of Jarrett's on my ipod and some are absolutely works of genius. But some of it seems to be pointless. A bit like a photographer who prints everything rather than one who selects the best image. I downloaded Jarrett's Sun Bear Concerts, 6 cds of improvisation. In some ways it is great, in others, interminable. I love his Still Live LP (I have it on vinyl, the European Quartet stuff with Jan Garbarek, etc, ), some of his 70s stuff is ok. What do others think?
jakenewmanbass
I think he's one of the greatest improvisors to walk the earth. I guess it's inevitable that such a prolific player should churn out some stuff that even he might call less than his best, but boy are there some gems in his catalogue. I offer you this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YM2cdtU2qTg
uncle psychosis
When Keith Jarrett is on form he's astoundingly good, but like you say a lot of his stuff I find a bit dull. The ECM stuff with Jan Garbarek I like, and his trio with Gary Peacock and Jack Dejohnette is fantastic, but for me his finest recording is The Koln Concert. Absolutely brilliant. White Cloud
Agree with the previous posts - he has great musical energy and is a top improviser. Perhaps blighted by inconsistent material...but some real diamonds.
BetaFunk
The last time i saw Jarrett live was his trio with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette and had to suffer the seemingly obligatory lecture about anyone with a camera or recording device. I found it so tedious and unnecessary i've never seen him since and never will again. Genius or not i can well do without that.

Your video post, being a great example Garry
RhysP
I love The Köln Concert album, but to be honest I've not heard much else by him.

jimbaby
I have the Koln concert and it is most impressive, only marred (for me) by the grunts and groans.
