Drilling Pickup Holes Question

Recommended Posts

Ok I have a hypothetical friend who may be, hypothetically thinking of converting their hypothetical precision to a dual pup.

Question 1) I like the idea of dual precision pickups but notice that a jazz pickup conversion is much more common. Is this because it is easier or because it sounds better? What are the distinct sound and tone characteristics of a dual P pup set up when compared with a P/J setup?

Question 2) Whichever pickup [s]I choose[/s] my hypothetical friend chooses, once the hole has been routed into the front of the body of the guitar, how do you drill the hole through to the rest of the wiring cavity? Surely most drills are waaayy too bulky to get any kind of decent angle to drill at 90 degrees to the face of the body?

Question 1: It's purely subjective as to whether you go with dual P or PJ configuration. The reason for adding a J pickup is if you are luckily it will enable you to get Jazz type sounds as well as Precision type sounds from a single instrument. There's a whole thread about dual P basses here that you might find interesting.

Question 2: You just need a very long drill bit that will allow you to drill the hole at a shallow angle from the new pickup route to the control cavity. If you are lucky the hole which takes the earth wire from the bridge might pass through where your new pickup goes so no drilling will be required.
