Didn't do anything for me musically or otherwise. She can certainly sing a lot better than she can play guitar.
As for the drummer....meh!

Yep, I agree with that.

Well isnt saying the drummist looks like a man sexist? Because as I said before, its natural when presented with an image of a woman doing something, to immediately think, yeah, shes tidy, or nah, shes a munter. Girls do the exact same. I dont think this is sexist. Its what makes this old world go around. If said tidy girl happens to be doing something in the picture(or video) that you like. In this case, playing an instrument, then your interest is piqued even more. I didnt make a sexist joke about them. I merely said my ideal job would be a quim barber/designer, which Im sure would, as the original joke suggests, have a bloody long queue for interviews.

To be clear. I dont think saying she looks like a man is sexist. I think its just a joke, same as saying" that guy looks like a bird" is humour. I think there is a bit of a PC overload on this forum at the moment. I mean its British humour , so lets not be so touchy about things like that. Most girls I know are not offended by this stuff.

Correct mate. It's gender-based bullying.

Mind you, regardless of whether it bothers anyone, it is a little like my Grandma watching David Bowie on top of the pops and saying, "Is it a boy or a girl? Where's the tune?". I don't know about anyone else, but I'd like to think I'm not quite at that stage of incomprehension of "yoof" culture yet! Although I probably am, in ways I don't even realise...

I didn't intend to compare the music, he's just an example of a performer with somewhat androgynous appearance, who I actually do remember watching on TOTP with my gran. My point being that "girly" looking men or "butch" looking ladies have existed in rock and roll for decades now, to the point that I'm surprised anyone needs to comment on it.

When I made this point in a ( hopefully ) humourous way in another thread recently I was , bizzarely enough , accused of gross sexism , racism and castigated by all and sundry . I have very serious doubts sometimes about the reasoning skills of some members on this site . Or maybe it's me .
Totally with you on this.
In that other thread there seemed to be a lack of understanding about how one can make jokes within the context of shared knowledge about our history.
Similarly, when a new female member introduced herself recently, someone (was that you?) made a lovely joke about her choosing to have a bass rig for ...

wait for it ...

the kitchen!
That and similar jokes are NOT sexist. It's a recognition of our sad past. It's funny too.

As to the reasoning skills, the worrying part is that you seem to still doubt sometimes. B)
Some people on every forum in the world are so thick that they don't even recognise superior minds when they see them. BC can't be an exception, and it isn't.
Nice folks though.
People here are (Generally) lovely! :D ;)

Unfortunately the problems occur because it is still very much the present for some people. I would imagine that for the people on this forum it is very much in the past, but some people are more sensitive to it because they can see sexism still going on and making peoples' lives a misery. We can't make jokes about racism yet, because it is still very much a horrible fact of life for some people.
I'm not sure that making sexist jokes should automatically be allowed because it is something that doesn't happen anymore, even if it didn't, is it right to make jokes about slavery?

I'm no prude and my sense of humour is very skewiff to my moral outlook, I'm a Macc Lads fan... But I am never surprised if someone doesn't like that kind of humour, and I would be very careful about where I made such jokes.

Maybe you're right and we should be able to make such jokes at will, but we're not as far along as you might think we are.

This isn't meant as a criticism, more a possible view from the other side.

Great post, KingBollock!
You know, I'm starting to think the swimming pool between you lot and me may be wider than I thought previously. I'm not sure though.

See, as a Dutch bloke, I tend to think the Brits and us blend well, and have a lot of humour and sensibilities that are similar.
However, recent experiences on BC seem to indicate that the sensibilities are wider apart than I thought. Or I'm daft of course.

It may also be that I can't or shouldn' expect the same sensibilities on an Internet forum as in everyday life on the streets.

At any rate, everything you write rings well in my ears, so I guess I must just become better at realising that BC first and foremost is written from UKayan perspectives.

Being that it was my bass rig, yes i thought it was funny... The spirit of it was meant humourously and while i do know a few people who would have been mortally offended, i got the joke... :D Especially as being a female 'rocker' is generally still considered a bit edgy and unusual (sadly)...

The 'she looks like a bloke' thing... Hmm... well, there does seem to be a rise in jokes about the 'T' part of the LGBT community at the moment - due a lot i think, to a higher media profile in recent years - people like paris lees popping up on channel 4 and radio1 and CN Lester putting a completely different spin on the whole bowie bit... And Juliet Jaques and Jane Fae writing for prominent (progressive) press outlets... And its sad that that the implication that someone might be transgender is considered an insult... Drummers are often muscly!

But hey, heavy thread and all that... Tell you what though, on a lot of forums i've been on this thread would have been locked by now as the insults would be flying everywhere! I guess bass players are just generally more chilled and thoughtful.... ;D

I can't really believe that this has turned into an commentary on sexism. Some people's minds too hard at work?

My original point was that I loved the track and the style that it was played in. And, I think the girls are hot. A great combination - IMO.

Anyone who says the drummer looks like a bloke or either of them looks plain is wrong and is missing the point.

Also, those of you who say she isn't a good guitarist ...... it's not a music lesson. It's entertainment. And I think they put on a good show - certainly make a spectacle.

Check this out nay-sayers:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XC8hsFA-lg

They get to do this - and you, most probably, don't.

It's the forumantes again I guess. The downside of the wonderful Internet.

Why the f*** do you think stage size and show scale have anything to do with our musical ambitions? You love this band, so what? Thanks for showing them to us, are we allowed to dislike them? This turned into a discussion about sexism probably because there's naff all to say about this band. You think they're hot and you would like to pooch them, that's great, go for it. Let us know how you get on.

I'm certainly an angry person but its confined to injustice and inconsideration. I don't believe I'm unpleasant. I have the success I deserve because of lack of self confidence and I am in no way bitter about anything because the bands I play with delight me and I do this through love of music, not status or money which you seem to imply.

I didn't say anything about status or money. They get to play at Glastonbury. That's good. That's success for a new young band in anyone's eyes. Apart from your's maybe.

I think calling the young girl on the drums "the bloke on the drums" is offensive. She's a young girl just doing her thing. Other musicians should encourage her - not disparage her. That's just a bit nasty mate.

So much hostility on this thread! The album seems to be selling well enough and they're getting higher profile gigs than most of us will ever achieve, so who are you to judge their commercial potential? The idea that something you dislike must have no merit looks a lot like pure snobbery, and I thought better of you than that.

Ok, my little stab at light-hearted irony got all f***ed up. I'm sorry. I have obviously come across as a sexist prick, and that wasn't my intention. I detest prejudice and bullying of any sort, some of you already know this.

What pisses me off somewhat is that because they are female, blokes on here start talking about how they are 'pure sex', how being a 'quim barber' is their ideal job, etc etc, and get away with that without nary a raised eyebrow. Virtually no-one has said they like Deap Vally's music, but that doesn't matter does it, because they are 'pure sex'. Are they feminists? Probably not, they are not The Slits. They are just another derivative band from LA being exploited by the sexist male-dominated music industry to make a few bob out of them (citation needed).

You know, I started a thread asking if BC members felt that playing live was better than sex. I received the most arsey, pathetic prudish PM from a rookie mod (who I've got on with well in the past and even had a jam with) telling me the thread had been killed and NEVER EVER to dare start a thread like that again, Basschat will not tolerate such threads. I even apologised to him (for nothing AFAIC) and didn't even receive the courtesy of a reply. And yet, we have massive cleavage avatars (with some BC members actually PMing the avatar's owners asking who it is! How f***ed up is that?!), sexist remarks, 'she's a right slapper' threads, and sh*t like that.

So can someone tell me what the f*** is going on here?

Thank you, rant over.
I'm now starting to get tired of referring people to my post above. READ the thread if you are going to make such comments about what people say.

I am free to make any judgements I like, and you are free to judge my judgements. But I judge your judgement that I made any judgements as inaccurate.
I judge your judgement of his judgement that your judgement on his judgement was an inaccurate judgement to be judgemental, anyone want to call me judgemental for doing this is being judgemental in my judgement.

Re the band, not my cuppa, girl reminds me of Courtney Cox, but the OP loves her look and music, so fair play to him, my mum used to like John Denver for similar reasons.

Some people read my explanatory post, some didn't. I'm tired of having to keep explaining that it was ironic, I thought we specialised in irony here in the UK. After all, I keep hearing British people saying Americans don't 'get' irony, seems we don't either, most people probably think it means having a sh*t and finding the toilet paper's run out.
