Love this bass intro, simple but effective. And what a tone!

Hell yeah, never known Jello play with a poor bass player. Everything on that album is absolutely stellar.

Toyah. Punk in attitude but not exactly punk musically as most of her stuff was pop/prog orientated, but in the day she got roped in with it all so I guess this counts to some extent. Anyway she had some great bass players in the early days. Charlie Francis, Phil Spalding,
and the bloke on this song Mark Henry.

Defining punk always turns into a nightmare.
Regardless of decade, country of origin if it's fast, raw, loud, melodic or basic it's all punk to me.

How about:

DK
Nomeansno
DOA
Nofx
Subhumans
The damned
Conflict
Stranglers
Ramones

All of which have been mentioned above, but also

Black flag
Minor threat
MDC
Crass
Disorder
Husker Dü
Propagandhi
Flux of pink Indians

Or is this just a list of bands I like?

. . Most of The Rezilos, especially 'Top of the pops' . .

and Love Song too. And with hard hat firmly jammed on head....punk only covers stuff from 76 to about 80..anything later is...well.. just kinda pseudo punk... meh

I'm pretty sure there's a fair few here that will argue that this isn't punk, but I'll always say that Joey Erg from the Ergs is the best "punk" bassist at the moment. Melodic and perfect for the songs. It's like McCartney at 100 times the pace.

Sounds pretty punky to me. A bit too poppy and American for my taste tho.

And I would argue that punk can include anything up to the current day. I keep seeing new bands coming through, and eventually playing at Rebellion. If a band comes through with a sound clearly influenced by 76-80 that can't be easily defined as hardcore, crust, psychobilly etc, what genre would you put them in? Punk is an attitude towards music and life in general, not a time period or fashion...

Haven't read through this thread but I'm guessin Maxwell Murder has had a few mentions. Also like Journey to the end of the east bay by them, it's not as mental but its a cool little line.

Maybe not quite punk (in terms of the song style) but 'I Choose' by the Offspring has a nice little line in it too.

Basstractor,
I got kudos!

Grew up on flux, omega tribe, amebic, antisect, a heads, crass, conflict, subhumans, crucifix.
Perhaps only listen a few of the old guard now but they shaped the way I think about stuff.
Add on the American and the Canadian bands and you have the greatest punk festival.
I have Finnish and Norwegian punk too.

Incidentally, some guy did a remix of Fluxs' neu smell, excellent.

Innersting! I had a hard time finding Norwegian punk other than Wannskrækk (now renamed Dumdum Boys and a lot poppier) as well as a local band I like, even though I know the city of Bergen had an active, reportedly good, punk circle, and I gather so had Oslo.
Any name you could share?

Basstractor,
Thanks you've just made me look for the records and I found some records from another band with fantastic manic bass:
Rudimentary Peni, YouTube them, mind blowing. Like nothing I had ever heard before.

I found my Norge album: Ingenting for Norge featuring, Allahrm, terror, Norrrske Budeier and Fader War. My deck is not connected so I'm not sure what it's like. I remember that a family friend from Norway got it and when she went to the record shop the man said it was easier to get hardcore porn than hardcore punk. This was in the 1980s.

Found this as well, Finnish compilation: hardcore 83, propaganda featuring Kansan uutiset, riistetyt, jakke & lateri, Äpärät, rattus and many more.
And I found another rough Finnish band, the Bastards 10 track EP with blue vinyl!

All loud fast and rough, the way it should be!!

I must get the deck set up.
Cheers
Jack

Ah! That name rings a bell. I'm sure I must have heard them in my quest for anarcho and hardcore. I'll check them out. Thanks!

Aw, man! Tusen takk! (Thousand thanks!) I'll immerse myself in the interwebs and try and check these out - which again may also give links to other bands.

That explains it. I've been stupid and have looked for the wrong stuff. Rats! :(
But it's a music style I'd never heard of. Similar to punk I gather?
:D

Thanks very much!

best,

Not the best sound but the best punk bass player, Rainey. You can see me at the front, to the right of the long haired dude, that me mate Mid, with other pals Swabbo and Donno.

My own personal favourite is the intro to hanging around. Sounds more like a dirty chain saw than a bass

Loving the sound of JJ bass, virtually any track, nice and sleazy, walk on by and the list goes on.
Conflict: great

Bert, enjoy the rudimentary peni, let us you know what you think, great artwork too.

Hardcore prawn is more fleshy than punk and pinker in colour.

It's strange when people say punk was only one date to another, that argument doesn't work with other genres e.g. Blues, rock, hip hop, tango, humppa, jazz etc. but people love to split into sub categories: punk, hardcore, goof core, geekcore, new wave, So Cal, blah blah. It's probably been said countless times, it's a state of mind. In the science world especially botany people are either clumpers or splitters when it comes to categorising species.

Ain't that so! For me personally, his parts and sound tower above everything else.

Bugger. I'll not search for this style then.
Ah well, upwards and forwards then, eh? If there's no music to find, I could always check out the nekkid women having sex. Kinda cool too!

Aye! Just think of MC5, Frijid Pink, Stooges, Peter Hammill (kinda), and I'm sure thousands of others.
