K&K bassmax was probably next on my buying list here on ebay,

This has caught my eye at a reasonable price and looks easier to fit tightly?

I have a J-tone fitted at the moment (the one with two black tabs in the wing slots) I dont have much output going into my Fishman so that has to be maxxed out to get anything useful, more often just feedback issues :(

I paid £50 for a used Bassmax on Ebay Pete. On my laminate it gives a 'good enough' tone for live rock n roll. I've had no feedback issues whatsoever at loud pub-band levels. I also bought a cheap (£17) tie-clip mic from Maplins (i think) after reading this thread on TB:

This cheapo mic gave an amazing sound, but i couldn't control the feedback at gig volume. Great tone for recording though and some people have no volume issues with it.

That mic looks pretty cool but I like the idea of the Bassmax from what you say, my playing is awful anyway but maybe if I could hear it then I will play better! Which wing slot do you have the Bassmax fitted to? and does it give a reasonable level of output as I think that is where my problems start, I have 3 different Genz amps and a choice of 1x10, 1x12 and a 2x12 cabs with the fishman plat pro I am hoping to get in nailed once the pickup is sorted :)

I've got it in the E side. I tried it on the G side but it made the G and D strings too loud compared to the E and A. The G is now a little on the quiet side but it's useable for what i do. Bear in mind that my bass is one of the cheapest available, and the weakest part of my set up is me! How compressed it is in the slot makes a world of difference to the tone so worth experimenting.

It clips the input gain on my amp quite easily so no problems with volume. I've got it blended with a home-made clicky through one of those little KK preamps.
I can see myself upgrading it in the future but i'm quite happy gigging with it for now.

Pete I have the same J Tone pickups and the treble side is tighter than the bass with no noticeable difference in volume between E&A and D&G.
I think the J Tone has a double peizo, back to back, in each pickup (but I could be wrong) so it shouldn't make any difference which side the cardboard is, try rubber like a piece of bicycle inner tube as a shim, I found it to give a better sound on other peizos I've fiddled with.
I'm going to get a lapel mike to try, I like the sound of it and our mandolin player has been having problems with nasty peizo clatter too so it could be the answer to his problems as well.

The Realist Lifeline is getting some good reviews on TalkBass and fits neatly under the bridge adjuster wheel. The BassMax is pretty much the most popular pickup for loud playing though as it seems more feedback proof than other piezos. You probably wouldn't go wrong with either

I got a block of wood and shaved off some slivers, and used that as a shim. Wouldn't rubber deaden the sound ?? ....or am I missing something ???

Yes I suppose it should really, I might try wood then.
The 'done thing' on the Palatino/Harley Benton EUB is to put a shim of rubber under the peizo to get rid of the harshness so I just used some I had kicking around, it gave a nice gutty thump with the Rockabilly strings and Jtone so I was happy.
I'll give wood a go just to see, it's good to experiment :D .

Indeed it is good to experiment...... I think I will give the rubber a go. I would quite like a gutty thump. B) :)
