Bill who?

Saw this guy for the first time in New York at Easter ... absolutely brilliant.

He's playing The Jericho in Oxford tonight, and I'll be there with another fan.

Seems he's got five more dates in Britain before going home.

Grab 'em while you can.

Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen played a sunday gig at The Nashville Rooms in West London in the 70s before they played the Hammersmith Odeon the same week. That was a bit surreal.

A great band that was always guaranteed to get the audience dancing in the aisles.

He's certainly not Bill who? to me. :)

Well worth seeing. As Kiwi says I was in a band that supported Bill a few years back but it wasn't this line-up. (Well remembered Steve - The Bull at Barnes I think). He truly is the Master of the Telecaster and an amazingly nice and talented guy with his own style of Dieselbilly music. In the bus he used to keep us amused with tales of touring with the Grateful Dead.

A friend of mine organises his tours and he uses our town as his base and quite often does an extra gig for his local friends as a warm-up. When he was over last time I had a chat with Maurice about 'his 51 Precision and he showed me that it is not a Fender but a custom copy. He is just so layed back in his playing and spent at least half the gig perched on a stool, so you can sit down and play.

Maurice chose to stand for the whole of the gig on Monday. Also, he may be laid back as a person but his bass playing is as lightning-fast as Bill's guitar playing, and we couldn't take our eyes off his hands, in an attempt to learn how to spectacularly spice up even the most potentially predictable basslines :D

Oh no he didn't!

He'd pinched a bar stool from round the corner and perched several times during the first set.

After I commented on his flourishes during the break, he stood for the whole of the second set, and each time he played a flourish he made a point of swinging the bass towards me so I could see what he was doing. :D

Maurice is an absolute gent, delightful guy and a great player. I genuinely wish I'd taken (surreptitiously) my H2 recorder. Some of the licks he tossed in were things I could happily spend evenings trying to re-create.

So it appears I was soo damn busy trying to follow his hands that I didn't even notice he sat down!

I recorded a few songs on the camera, so we may have some of his flourishes on disk.
