lowdown
I've written entire songs. And they will be recorded when I can. But I can't do anything like that right now, and I want to be able to make guitar sounds. More than anything it proves the point that getting a realistic sound is all about the playing and less about the actual sound itself. Milty - if you want decent guitar sounds you are either going to have to learn how to program the parts yourself so that they sound realistic , learn to play the guitar, or get a guitarist friend in to record them for you. Rhythm Guitar (RG) by Rob Papen. Not something I'd invest in myself - I'd rather work with a real guitarist than try to rely on emulation - but out of all the various guitar sims, this one captures my the attention the most. But then I'm a huge fan of Papen's stuff http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ktx1WzGmkvk

There's no separation of the strings in the strums and the up/down picking is far too even. At €99 you could by a guitarist friend a lot of beers to come and play the parts for you before the software would be better value for money. MiltyG565
This looks like a really cool feature. I don't know how to do this in Logic 9 yet, but I'm sure there's a way. What I want though is for it to consolidate all my tracks down into 1 track, to make mixing easier. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcY10gWKK-I
Mornats
I used the electric guitar from Independence Free (http://pro.magix.com/en/independence/independence-free.1013.html) on a track and it sounded decent. It was ages ago and the last time I listened to it I'd forgotten it was a sampled guitar And it's free, so you can just give it a go. It's a hefty download though. cybertect
I'm not a Logic Pro user, but here's my 2p on uprades and Apple's licensing model
Absolutely...until you have to upgrade because you want some increased functionality or plug-in that you can't install on your set-up, or your files become incompatible with other systems. I had a recording session at a mate's at the weekend and he's still using Logic 5 on Win XP - absolutely no issues and of course I can seamlessly open the song on LP9 on the Mac to correct our er...'interesting' chops. (although my awful fretless intonation is a challenge to fix in the mix). To be honest I really detest the whole upgrade culture that we have - phones, cars, furniture etc. Basses are (natch) different though.
Absolutely my preference to skip a few versions of an application if I don't find a compelling reason to upgrade. As has been mentioned earlier in the thread, the price of Logic has dropped dramatically since Apple put it on the App Store - I'd hazard a guess that the entry cost is now roughly in line with the upgrade price for earlier versions. It also means that there's no penalty for skipping versions if you don't want them. There's been an increasing trend with software to allow you to get an upgrade price only if you have the previous version, or the one just before that - skip more than one or two versions and you pay full price to get up to date. Certainly it's better than the approach Adobe are taking with their Creative Suite - which has been to abandon milestone 'versions' entirely and switch to monthly and annual rental with (promised) incremental improvements. If you stop paying £17.99 a month for it, your copy of Photoshop stops working. I've had a licence for Photoshop since 1994 v upgrading every two or three versions. PS CS6 may be the last as I can't justify a monthly fee simply to maintain access to my files, when I'm not using it as a full time professional (clearly Adobe have made a business decision that they don't need or want users like me) One other change that came in with distribution through the App Store is perhaps a little less visible as it's buried deep in the App Store T&Cs - as an individual user, you can install Logic Pro (or any other purchased App) on as many computers as you own.
MAC APP STORE PRODUCT USAGE RULES Except as otherwise set forth herein, (i) If you are an individual acting in your personal capacity, you may download and use an application from the Mac App Store (“Mac App Store Product”) for personal, non-commercial use on any Apple-branded products running Mac OS X (“Mac Computer”) that you own or control. (ii) If you are a commercial enterprise or educational institution, you may download a Mac App Store Product for use by either (a) a single individual on each of the Mac Computer(s) used by that individual that you own or control or ( multiple individuals on a single shared Mac Computer that you own or control. For example, a single employee may use a Mac App Store Product on both the employee’s desktop Mac Computer and laptop Mac Computer, or multiple students may serially use a Mac App Store Product on a single Mac Computer located at a resource center or library. For the sake of clarity, each Mac Computer used serially by multiple users requires a separate license.
For those of us used to the 'one computer, one license' (and hardware dongles of old) it's a pleasantly relaxed approach. ambient
Absolutely! I'm trying to find a good guitar plugin! Logic's guitars are really poor, I think.
I don't necessarily agree with this. Straight out of the box yes, but the sounds are there if you spend the time tweaking them to how YOU want them. This is an example that I did in a hurry, the 'guitar' starts about 1.40 in. ambient
I am going to upgrade to Logic X. Guessing that the release of Logic X was imminent, I bought a copy of Logic 9 express for a silly price off Ebay in January, I figured thee was no point in spending £149 when by waiting a few months I could buy the latest version (for actually less than 9 was selling for then). Does anyone know what happens to everything I've composed using logic 9 express ? Should I delete Logic 9 express or will it disappear when I've downloaded Logic X ? That's what I understand of it anyway. Also Logic Pro 9 is 32-bit I believe, and Logic Pro X is 64-bit only, so I don't think you can use them together, but I'm not sure. moonbass
I've upgraded to X and so far everything is working from 9 to X perfectly. I don't really use third party plugins so can't vouch for compatibility of these. (I wouldn't know which are 32/64 bit anyway!) X is more intuitive and pleasant to use so far, but for most tasks it's pretty much the same as 9. Flex pitch is rather amazing!

I've been using Melodyne for the last 3 months. You can download a months free trial, but you have to be connected to the internet for it to work. I've just gone onto the site each month and started the free trial again using a different email address.

Highfox
I just jumped in and bought Logic pro X to go with the MBP.. The whole Idea was for a portable studio. Using the Drummer programme the an Apogee one to lay down the bass, vox, acoustic and electric guitar. Good fun to have so much control over everything and decent quality sound. Lot of fun trying to learn what I can and can't do I'm impressed.
