Kev
So i picked up a Roscoe 5 string at the weekend, currently strung 45, 65, 80, 100, 130 nickel Daddario's but i think would benefit from a lighter guage string set. I am used to 34" (and more recently 33") and am finding i would like a set with a little less tension, which i assume is most easily gained with a lighter string. Any recommendations? I prefer nickel to steel, but otherwise i'm open to suggestions, particularly from Roscoe owners I was tempted to order a Overwater light set, however there is apparently a 2 week order time and id rather have strings sooner... BigRedX
Get in touch with Alan at ACG (skelf) and find out if he's still selling SIT strings, as they do 35" nickel sets. (I'd still be tempted to wait and try the Overwater stings first though). Edited July 16, 2013 by BigRedX
Kev
I'm tempted by DR Nickel Lo Riders 40,60,80,100,120, but although they are lighter alot of people talk about them having higher tension than normal strings, which may not work for me... Ghost_Bass
Anything from D'Addario as long as it's the "Super Long Scale" version of the set you're looking for. Example, i use Prosteels on my TRB (35") so i buy these: http://www.daddario.com/DADProductDetail.Page?ActiveID=3769&productid=157&productname=EPS170_5SL_ProSteels_5_String_Bass__Light__45_130__Super_Long_Scale edited for right link Edited July 17, 2013 by Ghost_Bass
JPJ
As a committed Overwater strings user, I'd wait for the Overwaters
molan
Fodera nickels are great strings and they go really light if you want. Their light gauge 5's run 40 60 80 100 120. These are standard fit on almost all their 5 string basses - even the £10K customs. They're £30 a set which is pretty good for quality strings these days
Conan
I'm tempted by DR Nickel Lo Riders 40,60,80,100,120, but although they are lighter alot of people talk about them having higher tension than normal strings, which may not work for me...
Aren't Lo Riders supposed to have a rather higher tension/compliance than other DR sets? I'd go for Sunbeams myself... andydye
Lakland strings are spot on for 35" scale even with string thru body as that's what's on my 55-02, that's also what they come with...I've a set spare if you're interested?
Kev
Now that iv spent a few days with the bass now, I'm not sure it was the tension that was bothering me, I think it was just adjusting to the additional scale length (2 inches longer than my last bass) as I actually find the tension okay now. I am giving the DRs a go, will report back!
chrismuzz
I use regular D'Addarios on my 35" sixer, strung through the body and they're still plenty long enough lighter gauges are easily come by as well... I found the standard gauge too tight as well!
Kev
DR's arrived today, strung up and they sound great, lower tension than the existing strings and have a great mid range growl to them, without the somewhat annoying new string zing. Feel nice under the fingers, B is certainly a fair bit looser than the 130 Daddario, however i like it Happy, hopefully they will last!
