spongebob
Just been reading up/watching about truss rod adjustment. Can't work out whether to loosen the strings or not. Fender site says yet, but quite a few say no! Probably been asked 1000 times, but loosen or not? Edited July 16, 2013 by spongebob
stingrayPete1977
The guy in the lakland clip you can find in the neck relief thread doesn't loosen them at all, personally I like to take the neck tension up by pulling the neck back by hand at the same time as adding or removing tension to the truss rod. EssentialTension
Loosening strings is not essential. Nor is tightening the strings essential when turning the truss rod the other way.

cloudburst
Assuming you can access the truss rod, then there's no other need to adjust strings. When tightening truss rod (to straighten fretboard / reduce relief): - Sit down. - Assuming you are right handed, hold bass between your knees with the back of the bass to your left knee and the heel of the bass wedged between your feet. - With your left hand, pull very gently back on the headstock to remove a little relief - just a little in order to take the strain off the truss rod, no more. - Then, with your right hand, tighten the truss rod just a little - say an eighth of a turn. - Retune bass. - Leave it for a day or so before checking again. Roland Rock
Not so easy with my P - I have to take the neck off to adjust the truss rod! Thankfully, it rarely needs it
Jono Bolton
How does this work for basses with headstock truss rod access? On both of mine the slot sits between the A and D strings, I can't get the Allen key in without loosening the strings off at least a wee bit.
