Bassmonkey Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Went to see Retox last night at Leeds' Brudenell Social Club. They were good (hardcore screamers playing at breakneck speed) but the 2 supports were pretty unusual. First Cattle - a bassist, 2 drummers and a singer. The bass was distorted as hell but sounded immense. Reeling from that, the next up were Zeus - 2 piece Italian bassist and drummer. Again, all sorts of effects and distortions but strangely compelling. Really tight and bloody loud. Who needs a guitarist eh? Quote

neepheid Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 No guitars in one of my bands (The Inevitable Teaspoons) - vocals, keys/mouthy, trombone, sax, bass, drums. Quote

xgsjx Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I tried to start a band with no guitars (or maybe 1 to play some funky wah stuf, etc), but ended up with 3 of them! Put one on drums though. Anyway, here's some bands I like with no guitarists... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0apbeC8Gz8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bVI8vJw2To Quote

lefrash Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 (edited) i play in a non guitar hip hop band. The sound is intentionally sparse so that its all about the tight rap and drums. In fact before myself and the keyboardist got involved it was a duo! So its perfectly doable. What I hate though, is when a bass player tried to mimic what a guitarist would do. Whats the point in doing something on an instrument when its easy enough to do it on an instrument that will make it sound great! Edited July 18, 2013 by lefrash Quote
Graham Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Can't find any decent videos of them, but Palehorse are great - 1 drummer, no guitarist, 2 bassists and an angry bloke shouting Quote
BernardJazz Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I played a venue in Birmingham last year where a band had a bassist/vocalist + drummer. Absolutely loved them, especially since the bassist was nice enough to let me use his cab. Unfortunately I can't find any of their stuff on youtube, but there's some stuff on BandCamp - http://gagreflex.bandcamp.com/ Quote
