Looking good , and better still ... sounding good , or not sounding at all if that makes sense  :D
Cheers chaps! It's taken the best part of 6 months from start to finish, but I'm pleased with how it's turned out :)

Better still my wife and our eldest have taken a keen interest in the old piano, so I'm envisioning our family becoming something akin to the Von Trapps if all goes to plan (minus the backdrop of Nazi occupation.., although our local authority has turned Tory again).

I just need to find the time to get set up in there and start making noise - currently dealing with newborn baby needs: fluids in, fluids out ;)

paul this just wont do mate, it just wont do, i feel like you are letting the side down badly............. where's the vital to any studio .....lava lamp ? ? :o
tttssss tut tut.....
you can redeem yourself tho.. its not too late,
here ya go.... http://www.glow.co.uk/lava-lamps.html ... ;)

looking great alot of work done there, what are the ceiling boxes made from ?
the side ones look like fabric covered wood frames ?
these gave me the idea for my ceiling ....
my ceiling is bare at mo so looking at your ceiling boxes made me think of doing the same and suspending a sort of wooden framed fabric covered sound board in the middle only about 2 inches depth ( as i dont have your height) but about 5 foot by 4 foot would really help my room i think.

All that aside i am more impressed in how you convinced mrs skol that it was not a garage you needed, but a studio ... all bow.. kudos kudos :i-m_so_happy:

Haha! I do in fact have an old Mathmos lava lamp in the loft which I'm now going to dig out next time I'm up there :D

The wall and ceiling traps are all built using lightweight wooden frames, wrapped in a canvas-like material (Cara Fabric) and packed with mineral wool (60kg/m3 density). They're great for taming the low end frequencies, which would otherwise be a big problem in a room of this shape and size.

Oh... and luckily Mrs Skol was supportive of the new 'music room'. It gets me and my clutter out of the rest of the house - so she's happy :)

 • 2 months later...

So two years ago we moved into Northamptonshire and one of the things I really wanted was an outbuilding / shed so I could do lots of woodworking etc. At the time I was building pa cabs (BFM included) as a sideline income. The place we found fit the bill perfectly and had a huge shed and the house / garden was exactly what we wanted. So after being on the market just three hours we made the offer and bought it.

Last year we had a little girl and I also gave up cab building. I needed somewhere to practice without waking littl'un and the shed seemed like the perfect space. This spring I finally got round to pulling my finger out and making use of the space. The shed was already lined, insulated and had full electrics. I built a frame inside, insulated with acoustic insulation, used what seemed like 1,000,000 genie clips and floated acoustic plasterboard and then had my first ever go at plastering. The end result was pretty decent.

I still have half of the shed as workshop and as you can see a really useable practice / recording / band rehearsal space. Found a drum kit for £80 on gumtree and with the addition of some decent drum heads we are up and running! I made some window inserts from an old memory foam mattress and some acoustic foam and used a whole mattress on the inside of the door. The result is we can have full band rehearsal in the shed and you can't hear a thing from the house.

This is mine... at the moment only a slab of concrete, but in the next few months it will be a studio!

For the moment, everything is crammed up in a smallish room :D

keep the build thread going , its looking tidy already :)

Nearly 3 years later I've finally got it all back together, no leaks, no damp, (no windows either this time) and completely rebuilt.

Now that's a music room! Love it. Makes me want to go rummaging... :)

Good to see that R2D2 has found a new home too.

PS: what software are you running on those monitors? Looks like an old tracker, or something.

It is indeed Reaper, which crashed almost fatally a week before I got everything moved in, making the transition a bit sadder than it should be.

Fixed now.

Not posting the reverse view, it's even less tidy the other side, mostly cases and instruments without cases, and piles of stuff.

Good luck with your space RockfordStone, if it's anything like as much of a pain as mine has been to sort out, I thoroughly recommend taking up knitting instead.

luckily im not building a proper sound proofed studio, merely sorting out an existing room to become a man cave, but it will need some work to the electrics, new doors etc... hopefully should be easy enough..

 • 1 year later...

had a revamp, here is my old set up, ( old but gold ;) ) but moved around a bit to make space for a second D8B.
been a bit of a task syncin everything.
has anyone got tape synced into there daw so the tape is controlled from the daw ?

Get ready for the very high spec ;) needed for all the wizardry.....

1 desk is 72 channel, 56 input 8 bus 12 aux every chan has compress, gate, large eq,
and controlls high quality plugins from Drawmer, Massenburg, IVL, TC, Antares, as well as others
with a full multiband comp mastering proccessor, final mix.
surround sound, full monitoring
Full Automation and recall of everything.

Whats needed to run all that..... ready
256m ram....................................... :o
300Mhz processor.......................... (remember socket 370 celeron !)
Hard drive only........wait for it......20g
1 custom motherboard...................

The recorder will record 24 chans of 24 bit wav at the same time with no effort
with the same 256m ram and a 300mhz processor !

i find it amazing all that can be run on so little, and all with 0 latency,...the secret ?? no windows or mac OS
everything runs from mackies own os which the whole thing comes on..... wait for it....... 3 floppy discs
Yep...thats it. all that...= 3 floppys :scratch_one-s_head:

Yea,, i know
its a bit of a mine field to do
i only know two ways to sync tape from a daw .. "Clasp" which is so expensive
And a tascam Midiizer Mts1000, which are hard to get
But have found this, not sure if this will do it, some of the old heads on here might have some good advice. :)
"old heads"... what am i saying... i am an old head. :( but even older than me.

Great Vid Chris , how long did that take to put together ?
Hi Kev,
the studio iv had for ages, only recently got the second D8B.

the vid ?
The vid took all of 15 mins, set the cam up press play then just used windows movie maker on my laptop windows 7, fast to use if you know what you want to do in the first place. if you want anything doing let me know im getting ok with that. could film the next bass bash?

or the dam sync ?
The sync, thats another story, there is already a program called " flying faders" for the mackie the problem was syncing the two d8bs together, as there is not alot of info out there, quite a bit of trial and error.
got the hard bit coming up... syncing the tape as well, now that is story ! your eyes would bleed before i finished :)

I did the vid mainly as a short view to show the studio for the new band site coming up, and also incase anyone wanted any advice on syncing up the two d8bs.
did you see the " Lower East side" bit ?
lower east side... of wirral, sounds so much cooler than smelly Ellesmere port
