Dusty Posted July 24, 2013 Share Posted July 24, 2013 Anyone heard any stories about how 4G is 'potentially' go to cause chaos with wireless systems. Was talking with my sound tech guy about buying myself in ear monitoring as I'm so bass deaf now, I cant hear what I'm playing anymore one the band kicks in ! I've tried wired and it works a treat. Anyway, was told not to buy anything yet, until they sort out the issues with 4G over powering old style TVs and Freeview sets/boxes and other wireless systems. He claims its a real mess out there !! icastle Posted July 24, 2013 Share Posted July 24, 2013 There are no frequency problems with 4G - it hasn't taken up any extra significant radio spectrum. In the UK, mobile phones have worked on either 900MHz or 1800MHz frequencies for decades. Power output of both the cellsite and mobile phone is variable, but has a fixed upper limit that's not changed. If you have items that are so badly designed that they drift into those frequency ranges then it should go in the bin because the mobile networks wont be 'tweaking' the frequencies they've paid good money for. As far as being a "real mess", I wouldn't agree. I've never had any problems at all with my channel 38 gear. Channel 70 (free for all) gear that has been used in my band has not been the same - we've had a couple (e.g. not common) of gigs where the channel 70 kit has been unusable due to interference. We've since dropped the channel 70 stuff so can't comment what it is like in 2013. But the concerns as quoted from the link - Interference from 4G mobiles will also be a problem for users of radio microphones in Channel 70, which is intended for amateur operators like pub bands and churches. Interference could be an issue for professional users in Channel 38, which sits right between a future Freeview frequency, and channel 39, already used for Freeview in the Central, Meridian, Tyne Tees, and Northern Ireland areas, as well as Ayrshire and Biggin Hill. Having gigged around those areas (not Northern Ireland though), there's currently no issues that I've experienced to date... I suspect IEMs will eventually begin to emerge over the "wifi" band... but until they sort the latency (good enough for instruments but not good enough for being piped directly into your ear), I would give a wide berth.
