Looper
Just got my first fretless, and I'm quite surprised to find it isn't impossible to play. I was expecting to be blundering around like a fool, but I'm able bash out an almost in tune bassline on it. I'm sure it will take a good bit of time and practice to be able to play it well but I'm really enjoying it already. It's an old beaten up unlined p/j that's in need of some serious tlc, but £70 well spent. Anyone got any fretless tips?
JapanAxe
To start with, play stuff that includes the pitches available from the open strings (E, A, D, G), then you can compare these with your stopped (rather than fretted!) attempts to check that you are still in tune. Hope that makes sense!
thisnameistaken
Also, if you don't already on bass guitar, use your fingertips, and try to avoid barring notes. It will make your intonation much easier.
leroydiamond
Try to develop vibrato by moving your fretting finger side to side when fretting a note.
