ambient
I'm about to buy an NS 5 string EUB. I'm just wondering what cabs people recommend to use with them ? I'm gonna be treating it as an EUB, an instrument in its own right, I'm not really expecting it to sound exactly like a real double bass, but I may do some small jazz gigs, so getting somewhere close would probably be nice. I'm currently using a Markbass rig that I bought from off here at the beginning of the year, I've got an LM2 and a 2x10 cab. Would I be better off changing the 2x10 for a 1x12 or would the 2x10 be OK ? I'm thinking the 12 inch speakers would produce a deeper sound, with more low mid ? PTB
I play real double bass, as you put it, through the same amp as you & I have MarkBass cabs with 10s & 12s. It's true I usually use the 12s with DB & the 10s with BG but that's more to do with space issues, both onstage & in the car. There are many DB & EUB players using 10s and smaller drivers with great success. There are various specialist DB cabs with small drivers so I don't think the concensus is 12s good, 10s bad. I think you will be just fine with what you have and I would rest easy until you have done a few gigs with your current rig.
fatback
Strictly, I think the bigger=deeper thing doesn't hold. Tens will be fine. As PTB says, gig away, and see how everything feels after a while.
Mr Bassman
Sounds like you already got an ideal setup
ambient
Thanks for your replies. I'm gonna stick with my 2x10 for now, and see how it goes.
Maude
I use one or two Ashdown 10" cabs depending on space and volume of gig with both EUB and DB and they sound fine. I tried some other amps/cabs that have been 'in house' that have sounded bad and others sound good. I have found it seems to matter more with DB than EB to have the 'right' amp/cabs and there doesn't seem to be any real reason for it sounding right, just trial and error. Go with what sounds good. Lfalex v1.1
I'd recommend experimenting with whatever you have access to or can otherwise beg/borrow/steal (OK, maybe not the latter!) Experiment with cab placement, eq and compression/fx (if any) to see what yields the most satisfactory results. I still haven't played my NS CR5 through anything but headphones via a Korg Pandora. Sounds enormous enough just through that.
