Gust0o Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 ... my back "popped" this afternoon. Not quite the same as when I slipped a disc, but enough to fell me. Spent the afternoon on the floor, thanfully with my work Blackberry to hand, whilst waiting for the wife to come and scrape me up I now have a walking stick, courtesy of the kind folks on my street. I'm not feeling the love for this gig, mind. I think I might have to play sitting down, not very rock and roll! Not a hope of being able to cancel with this notice, and my GP unable to see me until the end of the week. I'm suspecting I will be signed off, again, and sent off for physio. I'll let you know how I get on / how stupid I have been to try it injured / how I survive! Quote
wateroftyne Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 All I can think of now is this: http://youtu.be/ikHQT6mluhk?t=9s Good luck :-) Quote
risingson Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Hope you manage a speedy recovery Gus! Sitting down isn't very rock and roll but you could possibly compensate a little by engaging your nastiest distortion and leaving it on at all times, regardless of what tune you happen to be playing. Quote
seashell Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Oh no that sounds nasty You'll have to wear shades and try to look like some old Blues icon. Quote
Happy Jack Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Following recurrent lumbar problems, I routinely have a stool on stage with me and I perch on it for a couple of slower numbers in each set. There is nothing more rock'n'roll than getting old ... just go with it. Quote
Gust0o Posted July 30, 2013 Author Posted July 30, 2013 Me and my new matey, the walking stick. It's one of those annoyings kinds of hurt - akin to when I broke my elbow, and just wanted to laugh (funny bone, uh oh), I've got that vibe again. My GP is going to love me. Again. Quote
Silvia Bluejay Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 All the best for a speedy recovery, Gus - I've seen Jack play entire gigs in constant agony (and tried to help by being his personal roadie) and it must be absolutely horrid. Sending over lots of hugs. Quote
Roland Rock Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Can you do the whole thing on your back, pretending to be off your face? Much more rock n roll. Hope it gets better soon Quote
Dingus Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Now is the time to turn to your lightweight Bongo , Gus . Get well soon . If it cheers you up at all , a Saudi prince wants to buy Leeds United . You heard it first on Basschat . Quote
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Ouch! Hope it heels soon. Hope you get 'back ' to your usual self.( sorry) . Quote
Paul S Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Yikes. Know exactly how you feel. Diclofenac is your friend here. Or whatever anti-inflammatories you can get down you. Hot and cold if can manage it. Quote
Lord Sausage Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 To up the Rock n Roll level do loads of cocaine. It might even make your back feel better...well for twenty minutes. Then comes the anxiety! Quote
White Cloud Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I really feel for you as a long term back pain sufferer. In my experience the good old GP is a bit of a waste of time....get yourself to an Osteopath, or fast track straight to physio. As for the gig, get some anti inflams into your system and gobble some good pain killers. Quote
miles'tone Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I know how you feel (lying on the floor trying to straighten my back as I read about yours) except I haven't got any gigs coming up, never mind one tonight! I fully recommend a pocketful of Tramadol and a nice light Hofner as the way forward! Best of luck with the gig man and who cares if you play it sat down? I say you're totally rock'n'roll for actually turning up in your condition! Respec'! Quote
steve-soar Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Hope you have a pain free night. Get thee to the supermarket and get some Brufen/codeine based tabs down ya neck. I had to play at a festival with a broken arm once, after falling off a skateboard...I couldn't skateboard. I still cannot skateboard. Quote
gary mac Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Sympathies Gus. Agree with white Cloud, just by pass the G.P. unless of course, it's a pre existing condition that you know requires the G.P. Did the same a couple of years back. There I was gently raking the lawn, when I twisted slightly and Oh My Word, Immediate seizure somewhere in my back, followed by pain that radiated out to EVERYWHERE. Had to crawl back in to the house, feeling very sorry for myself. One session with a physio the next day got me sorted My lawn is now a haven for moss. Quote
Telebass Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Much sympathy from me! I spent 7 years playing in pain, and it does rather take the shine off it... Quote
charic Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 If it's good enough for parkway drive it's good enough for you mate http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUxX57QfUTs Quote
tonyf Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 I sympathize with the whole "can't get up thing". In an uncharacteristic rush of blood to the head, I did a "last number jump off the stage" thing at a gig a few months ago. The stage was slightly higher than I'd calculated, meaning I was moving forward as I landed and couldn't get my trailing leg out quick enough. Over I went into a sudo-parachute roll, in a vain attempt to protect my bass, and ended up exactly like Mr Tuffnal, on my back unable to leverage myself up as i was trying not to mess the bass line up. Cue the indignity of having to be helped up by two of the audience. Still, apparently I didn't miss a note. What a pro. #couldadonethat20yearsago #toooldforrocknroll #knowyourlimitsoldfella
All I can think of now is this: http://youtu.be/ikHQT6mluhk?t=9s Good luck :-)
Quote
neepheid Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Oops I'm at it too: exacerbated a "must have slept on it funny" left shoulder by playing badminton last night. Festival gig in 3 days, tent to put up tomorrow. Feeling a bit better today thanks to ibuprofen and some massage so hopefully it'll all calm down in time. Quote
