fretmeister
I am really fed up with heavy basses. I've had some really heavy Fenders / Sandbergs etc that have killed my back in no time. All I want is a nice active Jazz at about 8lb. Is that too much to ask? What should I be looking at?

Paul S
Fender Precision Lyte would get my vote. OK, it is more Precision shaped than a Jazz shape (actually a Stratocaster body shape) but it sounds more like a Jazz than a Precision (especially with pups in the middle blend position). Weighs next to nothing (under 8lbs I think), beautiful *really* skinny and shallow neck. I have a lot of lightweight basses but this is the one I always go to when my back is playing up (like tonight) as it is my most comfortable and balanced bass to wear. There are a couple of beauties on ebay at the moment - black and white.
fretmeister
No one selling a Sadowsky Will Lee for under £500 then?
Dingus
It all depends on your budget . I can show you plenty of lightweight options in the £2000-3000 price range , but failing that , the Fender Roadworn Jazz's are meant to be pretty light , and you could fit a J-Retro or use an external preamp to go active . Cairobill
My jazz is about 8.5 lbs, as is my stingray. Took a bit of hunting but it's possible.

[/quote] Yes, the Road Worn series are fairly light. And amazing playing/sounding basses as well. Add that J-Retro, a cracking bass I reckon. clashcityrocker
My mm sterling is very light, and the eq/pick up selector is brilliant
ead
If it doesn't have to be a Fender, my ACG is very portable. The Graft range are excellent value too.
fretmeister
I hadn't thought about a Sterling! I keep forgetting they have jazz like necks. Never played an ACG! Look nicely made though.
ead
If the little town of Disappearing-up-my-own-bottom is anywhere close by you are most welcome to come and try my ACGs out.
BetaFunk
My Siggery Roadbass 4 which a couple of BC members have previously owned. Nice and light as is my 1980s Guild Pilot. A Jazz like neck, 8 pounds and also for sale in the Bass For Sale section. Oh, and complete with tremolo it really is good for metal. chris_b
My Lakland weighs 9.5 lbs and the Lull is 8.5 lbs, which is just about manageable for my back and shoulder these days. I've been looking at Sadowsky Will Lee basses which come in at high 7 lbs and low 8 lbs. I also noticed that some Shukers are being chambered. risingson
^^ Those Will Lee Sadowskys are the best ones I've tried. The mid 'bump' available at the flick of a switch really is a nice addition to a preamp that really could benefit from a little more in the way of mids. Pricey though. TomDuff
I must admit when I read the title of the thread my immediate thought was "yeah I've met a few of them" but thats me being a sarcastic rock-dinosaur! The Fender Jazz Aerodyne is very light.
stu_g
I have bass centre stadium bass which is a rebadged MTD grendel, nice and light but very well put together has a bartolini active circuit and pickups, its my favourite bass at the moment
DarkHeart
My bitsa jazz weighs just over 7lb with no particularly lightweight bits other than the body
White Cloud
My Lakland Darryl Jones jazz bass was a featherweight at just under 8lbs....awesome bass. Laklands vary greatly in their weight...get out there and try some.
