Twigman Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 (edited) Weird tapping technique jazz fella..... Check out the nut on his guitar. Has Mark D Phillips had his hands on it? Can someone explain why the nut on this guitar looks like it is cut so deep, why it stands so proud between the strings and what is it made of? it looks metallic to me. Guest bassman7755 Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 The nut has dampers that stops open strings vibrating so that he doesnt get rogue sympathetic notes when tapping. Quote

Bilbo Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 It absorbs all sense of taste, tone and musicality before it comes out of the guitar..... Quote

leftybassman392 Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 If you look carefully you'll see that the fretboard is flat as well (no radiusing). Like others, I'm not a huge SJ fan, but it is an interesting technique. Does have it's limitations though (it's very hard to really attack the notes for example), and doesn't do anything that a good conventional player can't do (Guthrie Govan springs to mind). Quote
