BILL POSTERS
Didn't know where was best for this so apologies if it's not in the right section! Recently I got my parents old Hi-Fi out of storage and low and behold it's knackered and Sony don't have any sort of support for it so minus reverse engineering it I need to buy a new Hi-Fi. Just wanted to get some peoples opinions and experiences with Hi-Fi's. I mainly got my parents one out of storage for the use of the turntable, so I'd want one with a turntable. I don't own any tapes so won't need a tape deck but would like a good cd player included as well. Any recommendations or guiding thoughts out there? Thanks James
Is it not repairable ? Majority af parts are not Sony specific, and anyway a dealer who sells will be keener to sell you a new one. Sonys spares department was never great tbh. I used to have a Sony approved trade service business years back and, sods law, only skipped the manuals from the 80s and 90s about 6 months ago, I had hundreds as they all came free issue as soon as a new model came out. Try a decent eperienced independent engineer and see what he thinks, Most of the amps were pretty good. Turntable and Cassette decks probably just have mechanical problems due to grease hardening and belts drying out if its not been used for a while, so could well be cheaply repairable. The belt that ejects the CD tray was a really common problem with Sony stuff iirc, and the processor shuts the deck down if the drawer isnt opening when the motor runs. Cat Burrito
I read up on it first but when I went to Richer Sounds (everybody is recommending them for a reason!) and they talked me into a different set up. A great recommendation! I also invested in some really good laptop speakers too so I can actually hear the bass on things like YouTube. The ipod dock is a must (I think mine was about £15) but I use the turntable a lot. Funnily enough the CD player has probably been used about 12 times in 4 years
fumps
+ Lots for richer sounds. Although they ruined me lol I went in that shop many moons ago to spend my hard saved budget for my first separates system. The guy sold me an amp & speakers that I totally blew my budget on. It was a ridiculous discount he gave me, as it was one they had on show and was their last Technics A class amp, I just could not say no to it. He offered me Amp & speakers which was their flag ship system (It was on the cover of their brochure). he even threw cables etc into the deal. I went home very excited & then realised that because I'd blown my budget I had no way of playing anything through it........ I had to wait another month to by a CD player.......D'oh !!! But saying that 15 years later, I still have it & it still sounds amazing. As a matter of fact I managed to buy the same amp again as a spare on the chance that the old boy may one day give up the ghost. I'd never have anything other than a seperate's system in my living room, they look a little dated but it's there to make noise not a fashion statement. Dave Vader
I still have my grandad's old Wharfedale Chevin XP2 speakers, they are also still thoroughly excellent, off the back of a NAD amp I got for about a fiver 15 or so years ago, and my old Djing deck. Second hand is your best bet.
Whoops, well spotted! Here's an integrated amp - the important thing was to get one with the phono stage. Bags of power and a noticeably better sound than the Cambridge it replaced. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audiolab-8000A-high-quality-Integrated-Hi-Fi-Amplifier-/330987014732?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_Amplifiers&hash=item4d105d0a4c

Roland Rock
Nice one - this is just the kind of thing I'm after to replace my crackly Rotel amp
spinynorman
I've got a Cambridge amp from Richer, but it doesn't have phono input for a turntable, so watch out for that. I've also got a pair of KLH speakers I bought in ~1974, which are still going strong, and a rather nice Arcam CD player, bought used off eBay. But something integrated from Audiolab would be great.
Leonard Smalls
Ask the chaps at www.hifiwigwam.com - there's a wealth of knowledge available there! Be careful though, as you may get the bug and end up with a £30k+ mega-system before you know it...
flyfisher
It all cost about £300. The amp is a bit crackly and getting worse, so if anyone has any recommendations. Ideally up to £90 used
if you mean the amp has 'crackly' volume and/or tone controls, my recommendation would be to buy a can of Servisol Super 10 from Maplin or similar, open up the amp (usual warnings about unplugging from the mains etc etc apply) and give each pot a quick squirt and a bit of twist action. http://www.maplin.co.uk/contact-cleaner-4153
