Geek99
Any features missing that are added to later models, or added that weren't on previous ones ? Advice please Thanks
KevB
Think mine's a 2003 model, it's an S1 so I'm guessing yours will be too? quite a handy device to have on a jazz to give it some extra oomph when needed.
Geek99
Wow-really ? Where is the switch ? It has black knobs
Josh
You should be able to press the top of either volume control.
KevB
It's just the volume control for the neck pickup that has the S1 switch, if you depress the inner part of this it is on a little spring latch and will stay in until it is pressed again. Switches PU outputs from series to parallel and back. With it depressed the bridge PU vol control becomes redundant, all output is controlled from neck PU knob. Undo it and you are back to independent controls again, the tone knob just acts normally for either configuration. If I'm doing rockier stuff I often play with the switch pressed in all the time, gives the ooutput a ballsier sound. Geek99
Ill look tonight - sounds like I have bagged a good one
KevB
My S1 jazz is still the one I like to play the most of my 4 'proper' basses and cost the least. Picked up on eBay on a relisting for under £400 with a hard case included. Original receipt was still inside from some place on Denmark St for over twice that, it was under 2 yrs old when I got it. Wish I could play it more in the band but most of the songs in the set are shoe-ins for a passive P so that gets the gig at present.
Geek99
It's not got an S1 sadly - does anyone else gave an 03 that doesn't ? There is no secret button but I haven't fished the plate off yet to look there It's very fluffy sounding so I'm guessing it needs new strings Edited August 14, 2013 by Geek99
miles'tone
It may be a US Highway One rather than an American Standard.
Geek99
No it has a proper hard case and hang tags and its def urethane
miles'tone
The ones back then had poly finishes too and normal fender bridges instead of the nitro and badass that came later Does yours have a string-thru body bridge with string ferrules on the back of the body by any chance? It will if it's an American Standard. Surprised it doesn't have S1 switching that's all. It's an inexpensive and useful mod anyways if you do want it. Geek99
Yes it's string thru - thx for reminding me about that. Where do I get a matching black knob with button ? Any ideas people ?
KevB
Looks like there's one here; http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Genuine-Fender-250K-S-1-S1-Switch-Telecaster-Tele-Jazz-Bass-0061260000-/200946599018?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item2ec959c46a#ht_2081wt_815
miles'tone
Just get a 250k push/pull pot and keep your original knobs. This way your bass remains looking standard. (I don't understand why Fender didn't go this way as those S1 button knobs were a bit flimsy and sometimes would get stuck, plus they looked a bit odd as they didn't match the other jazz knobs as they were all black.) Here's a diagram for the push/pull mod: http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=jass_bass_sp
miles'tone
This is the one: http://www.allparts.com/EP-8385-000-250K-DPDT-Solid-Shaft-Pot_p_4508.html Cheaper than Fender's version but still a top brand. Plus you don't have to pay even more to buy the plastic switch knob.
Geek99
Thanks chaps - first thing to deal with is new strings. Ones on it are older than god
