Dandelion Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Please.. It is not my intention to annoy folk but......... I am currently inbetween bands, and bored. A position has been offered in a newly forming 60's band. They have good gear and own rehearsal space and PA etc. They are local. I want to throw my all into something, but I was hoping for a more rock orientated position, but there aren't any around here. Been following "Join my band" and its clones and local music press. There is nothing out there at the moment. I am 40. I depped for a similar band a couple of months ago as a favour, and I realy enjoyed it. But, how much life is there in a 60's cover band? A 1970's band I would jump at, but 60's? Is there any mileage in it. I know some people rave about the 1960's. and it is almost sacred. But it was over 50 years ago. Would I be flogging a dead horse by accepting this? Quote

Dandelion Posted August 16, 2013 Author Posted August 16, 2013 Cheers, that is what I am coming round to thinking... Just got image im my head of all the 1960s cover bands that I used to watch locally, The ones with the backing tracks. Quote
paul h Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 I'm pretty much done with cover bands that play a lot of 60's stuff. I do like a bit of Motown but I have no desire to be in a band again unless it involves a set list that does not feature all the usual crap I am asked to play Quote
geoffbyrne Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 .....the best music was in the 60's..... G. (well, it was!) Quote
gary mac Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 The Overtures are a local band to me, they are a 60's covers band and extremely busy. They get many a high profile, well paid gig. I've seen them a lot over the years and they always get the dance floor full right from the first number. Quote
paul h Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 I am fully aware that I'm in a minority and that a lot of bands do well with the usual 60s stuff. I just think it's such a shame that there are so many great songs that nobody ever plays. Quote
Dingus Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 If you getting out there and enjoying playing some songs with a decent group of people , does it matter what era they are from ? There were so many great songs from that decade that I think it could be a blast playing them . I can see no reason whatsoever to reject this oppotunity out of hand because it's '60's music . Quote

Dandelion Posted August 16, 2013 Author Posted August 16, 2013 1970's TRex, sweet all the glam stuff, and the heavy rock would be excellent. Quote

That's long-term thinking, I'll grant you that... Quote
bertbass Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Just about to start our 28th year, frightening. Don't forget that rock started in the 60s, The Who, Cream, Hendrix, Deep Purple, Vanilla Fudge, Pink Floyd, Yardbirds, Zeppelin, the list is virtually endless. Quote

JTUK Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 A friends band do really well out of it...and I was reluctant to go and see them as I had these pre-conceptions about material but they had such a good spin on numbers....that it was very entertaing. I think...or have learnt...that if you think the 60's is boring, then you are picking the wrong numbers What can be wrong with the Small Faces, Who and Stones..to start with...!!! Quote
Truckstop Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 My band do music almost entirely from the 50's and 60's and we always seem to go down pretty well. I think blues and rock n roll has a great vibe and feel that people naturally gravitate to whether they know the songs or not. Some of our best gigs have been in front of a bar full of 18-30's!! Truckstop Quote
Gust0o Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Not much demand for dubstep cover bands at the minute, so maybe the old classics are continuing to tread water Quote
Dandelion Posted August 16, 2013 Author Posted August 16, 2013 Thanks for your opinions. Quite lookng forward to it now I have spoken the guy. Quote
lojo Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 (edited) I saw the overtures last night, absolutely brilliant 60s cover band, and they get some great gigs by the look of it Edited August 18, 2013 by lojo Quote
steve-bbb Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 all decades are good except the 90s i <3 the 60s as i have a tape recorder memory and i can recall vividly all the stuff i heard on radio in mid 60s from age of about four Quote
Westie9 Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 If it's good it'll last, and there seems to be a lot of interest around the 60's stuff for weddings at the minute (age group 25-35 years)... Quote

But a huge demand for dubstep amongst young clubbers And plenty of acid house revival nights for ageing ravers like me. Horses for courses and all that. Personally I think good music is timeless regardless of the decade it was produced in. 60s soul can certainly hold its own on modern day dancefloors - and continues to be sampled by contemporary producers. It all depends on what tracks you choose. Very easy to pick dated cliches from any decade. I certainly wouldn't be put off by it - just choose wisely. Quote
