One of several reasons why the Concertgebouw Orchestra lets people play behind curtains, when they audition for free spots in the orchestra.

That said, afterwards, applicants have to play solo in front of an audience, even when the empty position ("chair") is not the first or second one, and the player does not risk having to stand up and solo when the contracted soloist suddenly can't perform.

Makes sense to me, especially for covers bands. If the audience already know the songs then they can 'play' a lot of them in their own heads - which is probably why the occasional bum notes from the bassist are rarely noticed.

I think it's obvious isn't it? That's why people go to see a live performance, is to get the visual, as well as the sound which they can hear at home.

And this is news and needed research?

Surely we've known this for years. Bands have survived on nothing more than image for years.

Isn't 'The Voice' based entirely on this concept. The judges are blind so the image is not taken into account.
