wombatboter
I was wondering why anyone can't like Collins playing ... the sound of his drums, his fills, his timing ? Help me out.. He is a very versatile drummer who plays with power and taste.. absolutely not a one trick pony ( he's a lot more than the gated reverb on In the air tonight). His playing on the Grace and Danger album by John Martyn of his fusion roots in Brand X or the tight "Paperlate" style.. What is there not to like as a bassplayer when playing with Collins ? What would turn you off at the end of that gig ..I'm very curious. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhcu6HBoifs Edited March 24, 2014 by icastle Link fixed. Clarebear68
He's underrated as a drummer IMHO.
wombatboter
Indeed... some songs he sings I really don't like (but that's a matter of taste) but as a drummer he's one of the best...
JTUK
Too sloppy...I think he hits the beats, but just not in the right way. Never feels right... which is not so critical in his proggie arena.

Collins is a good drummer and I'm not even a huge fan. If anyone was wondering who was conducting, that's the legend that was producer Arif Mardin. Bilbo
Collins was a great drummer in his day. Not the best but highly competent. His stuff with Brand X and a number of other fusion outfits was great. He has his limitations but don't we all? I think a lot of folk mix up his slightly sugar sweet pop stuff with his overall contribution. As a prog drummer, he was one of the best. molan
I like him as a drummer, one of the few I can usually pick out as having a fairly distinctive sound (rather than a style, if that makes any sense!). I saw him with his band during his major hit pop years and they were awesome. We sat really close to the front and just marvelled at the Earth Wind & Fire horns. Core rhythm section of Lee Sklar and Chester Thompson was pretty impressive too. Loved Collins' playing with John Martyn as well. I have to own up that 21 minutes of Pick Up The Pieces was a bit wearing though
Kiwi
I love Phil Collins's groove playing. I think he's vastly underrated as a drummer but in that clip he's not as relaxed as he has been in other clips. For example his snare isn't far enough behind the beat and it doesn't sit in the pocket very comfortably...compare it to this clip where the playing is much more relaxed (although he's doubling up with...is it Mark Brzezicki from Big Country?): Also I think the hit hat was too high in the mix at the start of the clip but the engineer sorted it out after the solos 4 min in. EBS_freak
Anybody questioning his playing is a bit of a fool... He may not be a chops monster but he has a great feel and knows exactly how to place the beat. For example, check this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5ulSPzy2CA Fairly straight forward... but executed with absolute perfection. Relaxed but a perfect feel.
wombatboter
What a great version... I started crying (really) In the beginning I didn't know who the bass player was (couldn't see him) but I heard that the guy had a great feel and yes :.. It was the Welsh lad again :-)
wateroftyne
I think he's an awesome drummer. Very musical. The R'n'B influence in his style gave Genesis a feel that elevated them above other prog bands. IMO.
BetaFunk
I saw Brand X many years ago and was so mesmerised by Percy Jones i don't think i took much notice of PC. On saying that i've always thought he was a decent drummer, just not up there with the greats but certainly no shame in that. With Kenwood Dennard also playing with Brand X there may be some that don't think that PC was even the best drummer in Brand X.
Paul S
This is the first song I heard him play on. The whole album is great, but this is a particular favourite.
Great link, Warren. I somehow occasionally manage to forget what a superlatively brilliant voice Peter Gabriel has got then thankfully, like this, he pops into my consciousness again. I was hoping to get some work done today but I guess it will have to wait until I have had my Spotify Genesis Fest.
