Bilbo Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 There are loads of transcriptions on here that I (and others) have done including the whole Coltrane's soloing on 'A Love Supreme' in bass clef, some Paul Chambers, Scott LaFaro, Ron Carter etc. Just scroll back through the Theory threads and you will find them. mickcope Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014
I've been having fun with this little app for IOS: Sight Reading Machine https://itunes.apple...d662692296?mt=8 Handy sight reading practice when I have a bass to hand or just on the train. It generates a tune and plays it; you can configure it to select a wide range of parameters such as tempo, key, note lengths, etc. Notably, it comes with presets for both 4 and 5 string bass.
Just downloaded this - thanks for the tip brilliant just what i wanted - Mick Quote
bagsieblue Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Are there any (good) sight reading Android apps? Quote
ambient Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 (edited) Don't know if this is any good to anyone ? It's an arrangement I did recently for my degree course. Sorry there's no TAB, I can't work out how to do it on Sibelius. AntLockyer Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Finally bit the bullet and spent the entire day working through learning standard notation on the bass clef. I've tried several times but working through this http://www.cyberfretbass.com/reading-bass-music/ made it pretty simple. (still took me all day). Now Ive started working through these links here. AntLockyer Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 (edited) http://www.thebassme...en-notation.pdf That was the last one I read. That was an interesting one from a rhythm standpoint and having to move to the A on the E string for the bit at the bottom of page one. It really is astonishing how I've managed to get the notes learned in a day when I've failed so many times before. Edited September 9, 2014 by AntLockyer Quote
booboo Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 The Standing in the shadows of Motown book is great even if the pics and backing cd's are not ageing well. Bass cleff Omnibook is also a great one to read (be prepared to take Donna Lee a couple of clicks under tempo at first!) Both good books and worthy of study as well as just reading practice. A more straightforward place to start is the 'What 'Duck' Dunn' transcriptions book of the stax basslines - less twists and turns in the harmony and rhythm than the other two books but good to have under the fingers. +1 on the suggestions for Bach as well. gapiro Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Thanks for this thread. I've had to learn for a show i'm doing next week, and have spent 2-3 hours a night learning to read again. I 've got to the point i'm happy with the score, but needed material for further practise afterward which this thread will be great for. +1 thanks Quote
andybass87 Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 Very helpful! I also found myself gazing towards those horrible numbers under the score! There arealso a few apps that throw notes at you and you just hit the corresponding note. Try 'basscat' and 'notezart' for Android. Good for passing time on the train etc! Quote
Stompbox Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 Excellent thread - just found it. Have downloaded several (and, just to show that I'm playing through them & paying attention, found a bum note in bar 12 of Happy Birthday - the third note should be D not C). All good stuff, and yes, I'm struggling with learning to read Standard Notation, but it's really worthwhile I think, if I can just put the time in on it. It is simply mad using the old "play it from memory" technique that I've done for years. Why would you try to memorise a novel when you can get a whole library full out to read???? I'll stick at it - but some days I find I make a complete c**k of it, and go off muttering darkly to myself, other days I think - "Hey, I'm getting it"..... Keep on posting Grangur! Quote
Grangur Posted September 28, 2014 Author Posted September 28, 2014 Many thanks for the comments and the point about Happy Birthday. I'll take a look at it. I'll also try to find some more to post. Quote
