Speaker cable extension

Hi
I'm wondering if someone can help me out.

I have the Ashdown MAG 300 Evo ii combo and I am trying to use its 15" speaker and connect it to my head.

At the rear panel, there is a cable coming from inside the combo which is attatched to the speaker. However, this does not reach up to my Peavey head.

Is it possible to use a coupler like this to put between two speaker cables in order to make an extension of sorts? The seller said it would work but I don't know if he is being genuine or if he would say anything? I read on one of the forums that you shouldn't use one as they are for guitar signals not speaker signals.

Yup, that will work. I prefer to think of such a thing as a temporary, experimental measure. If it becomes a more regular usage I'd be more inclined to solder a short extension in place. . less connections always seems like a better thing.

As a temporary fix it will be fine however if you plan to do it regularly I would recommend replacing the complete combo cable with a longer one that will reach both amps.

Is there a technical reason for doing such a thing? Will audio quality be affected if I use a coupler? Or is it better to replace the cable just for less hassle and to make things easier?

Incidentally, those couplers would work equally well with speaker cables and instrument leads.

I'd also regard them as a temporary fix because they introduce unnecessary joints in the cable, which can lead to dirt ingress and a noisy connection. Theoretically they'll also introduce a 'discontinuity' in the characteristics of the end-to-end cable connection which could affect the audio quality, though my bet is that you'd need fancy test equipment to measure such an effect and that your ears will be none the wiser.

I've got a box full of various adapters that have helped me out of tricky situations at various times but always on a temporary basis. If I find a regular need for a particular cable then I make one up or get one made for me.
