Clarky
Was listening to Son of a Preacher Man by Dusty Springfield this morning and noticed some great bass playing. After a google I found it was Tommy Cogbill, a Nashville regular (died 1982) who I recall Jaco Pastorius name checking on his instructional video for his Funky Broadway bass line. Not sure I have ever seen him mentioned on BC. So here's a couple of vids for ya http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dp4339EbVn8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIuJH3qroDY
Cat Burrito
He doesn't seem to quite get the recognition of James Jamerson, does he and yet he is of a similar league. He played for Elvis, the Box Tops and tended to lead sessions in the studio. A legend of bass
gary mac
He certainly provided some tasty bass lines. Until very recently Son of a Preacher Man was in our set. I did my best to stay close to the original, with some of those nice little fills and restrained busyness, if you know what I mean.
Mykesbass
Never gets a mention? (well it was two years ago I guess) http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry1401949 Edited August 24, 2013 by Mykesbass

Clarky
My bad! But two years is a long time in cyber-world and there must have been two gazillion mentions of Jamerson on BC since 2011
PTB
It's worth a reminder of how good he was every couple of years! IIRC, he was a jazz guitarist before playing the bass, rather like Carol Kaye.

scalpy
This is one of the baddest, bestest basslines ever committed to tape. Have it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcC4h5c4LoY
BetaFunk
"Dusty In Memphis' is one of the great albums and one of my favourites. Often other albums by her are overlooked. 'A Brand New Me' was released in the U.S. in early 1970 (It was titled 'From Dusty With Love' in the U.K.) and produced by Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff and recorded at Sigma Sound Studios, Philadelphia. The quality of the material might not be as good as 'Dusty In Memphis' but it's still worth checking out for some fabulous Philly arrangements and musicianship. The bass player was Ronnie Baker who appeared on many Gamble & Huff productions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmVOXvOi9Qk
