Home hi-fi system?

So I have a couple of vinyl here, but nothing to play them on, so after a little bit of looking around, I think I'm going to get a Denon turntable, but I'm stuck for ideas on sound systems. I know for records, it doesn't need to be stereo, but if it's in stereo, then I can also use it for listening to music from my laptop. I also wouldn't mind a subwoofer.

So, what packs the best punch for the money? You lot are usually good at this :)

I assume you need to buy an amp with pair of speakers to go with the turntable ?

And possibly a phono pre-amp, as a lot of (most?) modern amps don't have phono inputs.

Not sure what your budget is, but I would say have a look on ebay, you can get some great bargains on stuff local to you as people rarely like posting hi-fi items. Check to make sure that any amp you buy has a phono input for the turntable, you can buy external ones, but it would be easier if the amp had one built in.

With regards to the subwoofer, I would ignore that for now personally, I'd spend your full budget on a pair of speakers and an amp and then add the subwoofer later if you still feel that you need it. I did that and although I am still on the lookout for a sub at a decent price, it's nowhere near the top of my list. For music, I don't notice a lack of bass at all, I only really want the subwoofer for watching films tbh.

If you have sound on your PC, Maplin sell USB turntables. You can then use your existing gear :)

I only have a MacBook Pro, which has terrible speakers installed in it. I reckon they're really only for videos where people talk and that kind of thing.

I'm guessing you're one of those "young people" who mostly listens to music on earbuds! :o As above, full-range speakers FTW.

Without knowing your budget it is a bit difficult to guide you to specific products.

I have worked in the Hi Fi industry for over twenty years, but rarely get into this type of thread, because there are many diverse opinions and there is a danger of derailing the thread into an argument.

However the good advice above is to go for a decent amplifier and full range speakers. Make sure that not only does the amp have a phono stage but it is the right one for the cartridge on the turntable. It should most likely be MM (moving magnet). I have no idea what Hi Fi stores are near to you but if you check out Richer Sounds website you can get an idea what budget kit is available. Sorry if I am assuming you are "budget"

Which Denon T/T are you considering and what does it cost? There may be a better alternative for the money.

Although it is not always possible, try to have a listen to the kit with music you know before you buy.

Sounds like a pudding from your local chinese takeaway.

Round most of North Wark's, its usually a derelict, boarded up building that used to have books in it.

In Northern Ireland, they are usually very empty, very fresh and expensive buildings that should have books in them. :D
